Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician

Pay: $15–$19/hour

Schedule: Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Ophthalmic Technician – Must-Have Requirements

• Prior experience as an Ophthalmic Technician strongly preferred
• Experience performing visual acuity and visual field testing
• Ability to measure intraocular pressure (tonometry)
• Knowledge of ocular measurements and eye muscle testing
• Strong patient care and communication skills

Ophthalmic Technician – Position Summary

• Provide direct patient care under the supervision of the Ophthalmologist
• Perform diagnostic eye testing and assist with clinical procedures
• Coordinate surgical scheduling and obtain prior authorizations
• Support cataract surgery scheduling twice weekly at the ASC

Ophthalmic Technician – Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Conduct visual acuity (near, distance, pinhole) and visual field tests
• Perform tonometry to measure intraocular pressure
• Measure corneal curvature using keratometer or ophthalmometer
• Complete ocular motility testing for eye muscle function
• Obtain axial length and other anatomical ocular measurements
• Administer topical ophthalmic and oral medications as directed
• Obtain prior authorizations for surgical procedures
• Schedule cataract surgeries at ambulatory surgery center
• Maintain accurate patient documentation

Ophthalmic Technician – Additional Qualifications

• Experience in ophthalmology or optometry clinic setting
• Familiarity with EMR systems
• Strong organizational and multitasking skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment

* Assist ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions. May administer eye exams, administer eye medications, and instruct the patient in care and use of corrective lenses.

* Take and document patients' medical histories.

* Operate ophthalmic equipment, such as autorefractors, phoropters, tomographs, or retinoscopes.

* Measure and record lens power, using lensometers.

* Assist physicians in performing ophthalmic procedures, including surgery.

* Conduct ocular motility tests to measure function of eye muscles.

* Clean or sterilize ophthalmic or surgical instruments.

* Adjust or make minor repairs to spectacles or eyeglasses.

* Conduct binocular disparity tests to assess depth perception.

* Assess refractive conditions of eyes, using retinoscopes.

* Maintain ophthalmic instruments or equipment.

* Instruct patients in the care and use of contact lenses.

* Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications.

* Take anatomical or functional ocular measurements of the eye or surrounding tissue, such as axial length measurements.

* Conduct tonometry or tonography tests to measure intraocular pressure.

* Measure visual acuity, including near, distance, pinhole, or dynamic visual acuity, using appropriate tests.

* Conduct visual field tests to measure field of vision.

* Measure corneal curvature with keratometers or ophthalmometers to aid in the diagnosis of conditions, such as astigmatism.

* Assist patients to insert or remove contact lenses.

* Call patients to inquire about their post-operative status or recovery.

* Assist patients to select eyewear.
