The Histotechnician III prepares tissue specimens for surgical pathology examination. This includes evaluating the acceptability of the specimens, properly embedding the processed tissue, cutting/sectioning the specimens, and staining the slides using automated or manual methods.
What You Will Do\n\n
- \n
- Performs embedding and cutting on both biopsies and large surgical specimens, while consistently meeting quality and productivity standards. \n
- Performs and troubleshoots routine H&E and Special Staining, including Muscle Enzymes. \n
- Initiates, solves problems, and troubleshoots independently as it pertains to their assigned duties. May be designated a specific area within the lab to oversee instrumentation, policies, procedures, workflows, and any other tasks relevant to specified area. \n
- Able to perform immunohistochemical (IHC) staining independently. Successfully QC all slides, prepare prep kits and other antibodies, responsible for validations (new lot, new antibody, new instrumentation, new control blocks, etc.), troubleshoot staining errors/quality concerns. Responsible for machine maintenance. \n
- Performs, troubleshoots, and appropriately assesses quality control reactions for all special stains, muscle enzyme stains and IHC stains; maintains competencies for these tasks. \n
- Trains students and new employees. \n
- Assists with writing and updating policies and procedures. \n
- Maintains knowledge of relevant CAP checklists through active participation in the inspection process. \n
- Collaborates with department technical and medical leadership to ensure laboratory compliance with all regulatory agencies by established standards. \n
- Assists with instrument and control tissue validations; supports new assay development as assigned by Supervisor. \n
- Makes good business decisions based on the needs of the laboratory, pathologists, patients, and other customer segments. \n
- Contributes to a positive work environment. \n

- \n
- Associate's Degree in Histology or in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution (Required) \n
\n
- \n
- 2+ years relevant experience in a clinical histology laboratory (Required) and \n
- 1+ years relevant experience in special stains (Required) and \n
- less than 1 year of training AND competency in immunohistochemistry (IHC) (Required) \n

- \n
- Basic computer skills (Required proficiency) \n
- Good organizational skills (Required proficiency) \n
- Able to multitask (Required proficiency) \n
- Able to work effectively independently and with other team members (Required proficiency) \n
- Knowledge of standard lab policy and procedures, safety practices equipment and instrumentation (Required proficiency) \n
- Knowledge of principals, concepts, and methodology sufficient to perform the full spectrum of histologic preparation of specimens for microscopic evaluation (Required proficiency) \n
- Knowledge of staining procedures, fixatives, and preparation techniques common to histology laboratories (Required proficiency) \n
- Knowledge of laboratory safety including standard precautions for handling hazardous chemicals and solutions (Required proficiency) \n
- Knowledge of CAP/CLIA regulations as they pertain to histopathology (Required proficiency) \n
