Controller / VP of Finance - Hands-On Accounting & Financial Reporting

We are a professionally run healthcare services company seeking a highly capable, hands-on Controller / VP of Finance to own the company’s accounting function, financial reporting, and overall financial organization.

This is a working leadership role for someone who is technically strong, detail-oriented, highly accountable, and comfortable personally handling the accounting work required to maintain accurate, timely, and professional financial reporting.

We operate with a lean structure. We have an internal billing team, but no large accounting department. This role is intended for someone who wants to directly own the accounting function rather than simply supervise layers of staff.

Core Responsibilities

Day-to-Day Accounting Ownership

• Personally own and manage the company’s accounting operations
• Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
• Review and maintain general ledger activity, journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules
• Ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity of financial reporting
• Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies or reporting issues directly
• Maintain disciplined accounting procedures, documentation standards, and internal controls
• Support ongoing accrual-based accounting and financial reporting processes
• Experience with cash-to-accrual based transition
• Work closely with ownership and operational leadership on financial matters

Financial Reporting & External Financial Support

• Prepare and review financial statements and reporting packages
• Support external financial reviews, quality of earnings reviews, audits, and lender reporting processes
• Assist with financial analysis, reporting improvements, and organizational planning initiatives
• Help maintain a practical, efficient finance function without unnecessary bureaucracy or overcomplication

What We Are Looking For

• Strong technical accounting background with hands-on operational accounting experience
• Experience in Controller, Accounting Manager, Finance Director, or similar roles
• Strong understanding of accrual accounting and financial reporting
• Experience supporting audits, lender reporting, quality of earnings reviews, or external financial diligence processes
• Ability and willingness to personally perform accounting work as needed
• High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and personal accountability
• Strong Excel and accounting systems proficiency
• Comfortable operating independently in a lean, entrepreneurial environment
• Strong problem-solving ability and sound professional judgment

Preferred Experience

• CPA preferred
• Healthcare services experience preferred
• Experience in privately held, growth-oriented, or professionally managed businesses is a plus

What This Role Is Not

This is not a purely strategic executive role removed from the accounting function.

We are specifically seeking someone who takes pride in ownership, execution, accuracy, and maintaining direct involvement in the underlying accounting operations.

This role is best suited for a true accounting operator who prefers doing high-quality work over managing large teams or corporate politics.
