This is an assignment for a Material Lab Tester at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)

Position Type: Temporary Assignment with Potential for Permanent Hire

Pay Rate: $19.00 - $25.00 per hour (based on TxDOT classification)

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking a qualified Material Lab Tester to support the Materials and Tests Division. This position offers an excellent opportunity for candidates with laboratory experience and an interest in transportation materials, quality assurance, and engineering-related testing.

Position Summary

The Material Lab Tester performs laboratory testing and inspections to ensure construction materials meet TxDOT specifications and quality standards. This role supports the development and maintenance of Texas transportation infrastructure through testing, analysis, and documentation of construction materials.

Essential Duties

  • Perform routine laboratory testing on construction materials.
  • Inspect manufacturing processes and plant equipment to ensure compliance with TxDOT specifications.
  • Collect, secure, prepare, and process material samples for testing.
  • Record test results and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Perform calculations and convert raw data into required units of measurement.
  • Analyze and evaluate test results for compliance.
  • Assist with quality assurance and quality monitoring programs.
  • Support field personnel in resolving materials-related issues.
  • Specialize in testing specific materials such as aggregates, asphalt, concrete, or soils.

Minimum QualificationsExperience

  • Two (2) years of laboratory work, material inspection, engineering-related activities, or a combination of related experience.
  • Related college coursework or technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Laboratory testing procedures and methodologies
  • Materials used in highway and bridge construction
  • Aggregates, asphalt, concrete, and soil testing
  • Quality assurance and inspection procedures
  • Ability to accurately document and maintain records
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Work Environment

This position may involve:

  • Laboratory testing environments
  • Material sampling and inspections at manufacturing plants
  • Outdoor fieldwork at construction sites
  • Lifting and moving material samples as needed

The Materials and Tests Division provides expertise in materials quality and technology for the Texas transportation system. The division develops and maintains TxDOT specifications and testing procedures, conducts materials testing for compliance, administers quality assurance programs, and assists field operations with materials-related challenges and innovations.
