Job Type: Contract School Year

Job Mode: On-Site / Part Time 45 minutes of services per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Instruct students with a visual impairment in the development of skills and knowledge that enable them to travel independently to the highest degree possible, based on assessed needs and the students' Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Prepares and uses equipment and materials for the development of orientation and mobility skills (e.g., tactual maps, models, distance low vision aids, and long canes).
  • Provide consultation and support service to parents, regular and special education teachers, other school personnel, and sighted peers.
  • Confer regularly with classroom teachers, physical education teachers, and/or other special education personnel to assist in classroom and environmental modifications, adaptations, considerations, and to ensure reinforcement of appropriate orientation, mobility, and/or vision skills, that will encourage the student with a visual impairment to travel independently in settings.
  • Participate in parent conferences and meetings as needed.
  • Provide in-service training to regular and special education personnel, sighted peers, and parents concerning the orientation, mobility, and/or vision needs of the student with visual impairment and appropriate methods and procedures for interacting with visually impaired persons that will foster maximum independence and safety.
  • Provide other support services for visually impaired students as requested by the school district.
  • May bill for Medicaid eligible students as per the School District's request and per Medicaid guidelines.
  • Transports students to various community locations as necessary to provide meaningful instruction in realistic learning environments.
  • Provider is required to obtain district supervisor approval, parent permission, certify to a safe driving record, provide proof of required auto insurance coverage limits, and sign district acknowledgement of liability documents provided by Santa Rosa School Board Risk Management office.

Orientation Mobility Specialist will meet the following minimal qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Visually Impaired.
  • Certification in Orientation and Mobility (O&M).
  • Current CPR Certification (lnfant/Child/Adult/AED) and First Aid Certification.
  • Complete Youth Mental Health First Aid Certification/Training.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • The candidate must hold a teaching certificate for visually impaired in the state of FL.
