Position Title: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
Department: Clinical Services
Reports To: Practice Manager/Practice Owner and Supervising Provider
Employment Type: Full-Time (32 Hours)

Position Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is responsible for providing high-quality clinical and administrative support to healthcare providers while ensuring exceptional patient care. In a small privately owned medical practice, the CMA plays a vital role in maintaining efficient office operations by assisting with patient care, clinical procedures, documentation, and communication. The ideal candidate is compassionate, dependable, organized, and committed to delivering outstanding service in a collaborative team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examinations by obtaining and documenting medical history, current medications, allergies, and chief complaints.
  • Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, weight, oxygen saturation, and BMI.
  • Assist providers during examinations and medical procedures.
  • Administer medications and injections as directed and within scope of practice.
  • Perform phlebotomy, specimen collection, EKGs, and point-of-care testing as required.
  • Prepare and maintain examination rooms, ensuring cleanliness and proper stocking of supplies.
  • Sterilize and maintain medical instruments and equipment according to infection control standards.
  • Educate patients regarding medications, treatment plans, preventive care, and follow-up instructions.
  • Process laboratory specimens and coordinate outside laboratory testing.
  • Monitor inventory of clinical supplies and notify management when supplies need replenishing.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient check-in and check-out as needed.
  • Schedule appointments and coordinate patient follow-up visits.
  • Verify patient information and update electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Document patient encounters accurately and promptly within the EMR system.
  • Assist with prescription refill requests under provider direction.
  • Coordinate referrals, prior authorizations, and diagnostic testing.
  • Answer patient phone calls and respond appropriately within scope of practice.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Assist with quality improvement initiatives and regulatory compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential from an accredited certifying organization.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and clinical procedures.
  • Experience using electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience in an outpatient or primary care setting.
  • Experience with insurance prior authorizations and referrals.
  • Experience performing phlebotomy and administering injections.
  • Familiarity with quality reporting measures and preventive care guidelines.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform clinical procedures and operate medical equipment.
  • Ability to assist patients with mobility when necessary.
