POSITION SUMMARY:
The Occupational Therapist organizes and conducts occupational therapy programs for the facility to facilitate rehabilitation. In addition, he/she directs resident participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance. The Occupational Therapist facilitates the learning of those skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity, in order to diminish or correct pathology.
RESPONSIBLITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES
1 Evaluates residents, develops appropriate treatment goals and methods, implements the occupational therapy treatment plan, and completes all related documentation and record keeping regarding these services; this includes application of therapeutic techniques in areas such as cognitive skills, muscle strength, coordination endurance, mobility, perceptual abilities, sensory awareness, sitting and standing tolerance, balance, activities of daily living, joint protection, work simplification, orientation, and psychological functioning;
2 Designs and fits adaptive devices and trains residents in the use of adaptive devices including splints and orthotics;
3 Selects appropriate activities suited to the individual’s physical and mental capacity, intelligence level and interest;
4 Consults with other members of the rehabilitation team to select the most appropriate activity program consistent with the needs and capabilities of each resident;
5 Instructs resident in the skills and techniques required for participation in activities and evaluates resident progress, attitudes, and behavior as related to rehabilitative potential;
6 Adapts program according to the needs of individual resident;
7 Attends and contributes to resident care, staffing conferences and other related meetings;
8 Conducts training programs and participates in training medical, nursing and other personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives;
9 Requisitions supplies and equipment as necessary;
10 Cleans, maintains, identifies and reports the need for repair of equipment as necessary;
11 Supervises supportive personnel in accordance with state and professional standards;
12 Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere that recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights.
SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1 Graduate of an occupational therapy curriculum accredited jointly by the American Occupational Therapy Association and certified by the American Occupational Therapy Association under its requirements.
2 Licensed and/or eligible for licensure as required in the state.
3 Registered and/or eligible for certification by the American Occupational Therapy Certification Board.
