CDL Yard Switcher -- Hazmat Yard Operations

At STERIS, safety and precision keep our operations running. As a CDL Yard Switcher, you’ll orchestrate the flow of hazmat trailers in a compact yard—anticipating bottlenecks, coordinating with supervisors over radio, and documenting each move to exacting standards.

Position Snapshot

• Schedule: 5:30am – 2:00pm, Monday–Friday, with likely 5–8 hour Saturday shifts
• Compensation: $26.64/hour; $27.37 starting July 2026 + quarterly bonus (bi‑weekly pay)
• Where: 7501 Page Ave, St. Louis, MO
• Employment: Direct | Full-time | Union

Your Mission

Imagine a tight turn between two staged trailers. You align, check your mirrors, confirm clearances, and make the move—first time, every time. That care extends to everything you do:

• Operate highway and industrial trucks on company property; may support local STERIS facility deliveries once certified.
• Reposition trailers from blocked or crowded areas under supervisor direction, prioritizing safety for people, equipment, and inventory.
• Load/unload materials on company trucks as required.
• Move and load hazardous waste following supervisor guidance and proper material handling practices on company, customer, or supplier premises.
• Operate electric forklifts or other PIT equipment when needed.
• Perform daily equipment care: clean, check oil/water/battery, log results, and refill as necessary.
• Document activities per cGMP and ISO procedures (written/electronic) and communicate lot moves/updates via two‑way radio.
• Maintain a clean truck and work area at all times.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
• Valid Missouri CDL (A)
• Manual dexterity; strong peripheral vision
• High‑school level math, writing, and data entry
• Ability to wear PPE; read scales; work independently with minimal supervision; maneuver trailers in tight spaces; read and understand instructions, safety labels, and machine manuals

Preferred Experience

• Class C CDL and/or hazmat/tanker certifications
• Manual move tracking using a two‑way radio
• Clear verbal communication with team members
• Basic truck maintenance
• Electric forklift operation

Physical & Other Requirements

• Lift/move up to approximately 60 lbs
• Comfortable climbing to ~10 feet; sit for extended periods
• Good hand/eye coordination
• Able to gather and enter quality and inventory control data (written or electronic)
• Must hold a valid Missouri CDL or equivalent
