Stairs and Railing Fabricator is a skilled tradesperson who designs, fabricates, and assembles staircases and architectural railings from metal, wood, or other materials to meet architectural and safety specifications. They work from shop drawings, blueprints, and CAD layouts to produce components that are structurally sound, code-compliant, and aesthetically appropriate

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret drawings: Read and understand shop drawings, blueprints, CAD files, and layout templates to produce accurate stair and railing components 

  • Fabricate components: Cut, bend, roll, and form stringers, handrails, guardrails, and ornamental features using manual or powered equipment

  • Weld and assemble: Perform fit-up, tack, and finish welding (MIG/TIG) on steel, aluminum, and stainless steel to meet design and code requirements 

  • Measure and layout: Use precision measuring tools (e.g., tape measures to 1/32") to ensure correct rise, run, pitch, and alignment 

  • Build fixtures/jigs: Create custom fixtures for complex layouts, especially for helix, spiral, or curved stair systems 

  • Workshop operations: Operate welding machines, pipe/plate rollers, press brakes, saws, and overhead cranes safely

  • Quality control: Check layouts with team members, maintain tolerances, and ensure compliance with building codes (e.g., IBC, ADA, OSHA) 

  • Installation prep: Prepare components for on-site installation, including finishing and marking

  • Workplace safety: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment; follow safety protocols for tools and materials 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience: At least 1 year (entry-level) to several years (mid-senior) in stair or railing fabrication; extensive experience preferred for complex projects 

  • Technical skills: Proficiency in MIG/TIG welding, grinding, fitting, and finishing; ability to read and interpret technical schematics 

  • Knowledge: Understanding of geometry, layout principles, material properties, and fabrication tolerances

  • Physical ability: Able to lift up to 50 lbs, work standing for long periods, and operate in a physically demanding shop environment 

  • Certifications: Welding certification

Work Environment

  • Fabrication shop or metalworks facility, often with overhead crane operations.

  • May require onsite presence for installation prep or project coordination.

  • Overtime and weekend work may be required to meet production schedules
