Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) / Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist
Location: Naperville, IL
Schedule: Full-Time | Monday-Friday | 8:00 AM-3:00 PM
Student Population: K-12
Position Overview
Allied OneSource Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) and/or Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist to support students in a school-based setting. This professional will provide specialized instruction, conduct evaluations, develop individualized educational plans, and help students with visual impairments gain the skills, independence, and confidence needed for academic success and lifelong self-sufficiency.
The ideal candidate is passionate about empowering students through individualized support, braille literacy, assistive technology, and safe travel instruction.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluations & Assessments
- Conduct Functional Vision Assessments (FVAs)
- Conduct Learning Media Assessments (LMAs)
- Perform Orientation & Mobility (O&M) evaluations
- Identify student strengths, needs, and appropriate supports
IEP Development & Implementation
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Establish measurable goals and objectives
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and related service providers to support student success
Direct Student Services
- Provide direct TVI and/or O&M instruction in individual and group settings
- Teach braille literacy and access skills
- Provide instruction in assistive technology and adaptive tools
- Teach sensory utilization, cane skills, route travel, and safe navigation techniques
Accessibility & Environmental Adaptations
- Recommend accommodations and modifications
- Support Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM)
- Assist with environmental adaptations to improve student access and independence
Documentation & Progress Monitoring
- Maintain accurate service logs and educational records
- Track student progress toward IEP goals
- Complete required reporting and evaluation documentation in a timely manner
Collaboration
- Partner with classroom teachers, school administrators, related service providers, and families
- Participate actively in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions
- Provide consultation regarding best practices for students with visual impairments
Compliance
- Adhere to all district, state, federal, and professional standards
- Ensure services remain compliant with special education regulations and requirements
Minimum QualificationsRequired
- Valid State Teaching Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) and/or
- ACVREP Certification (COMS) as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist
- Strong knowledge of:
- Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)
- Braille instruction
- Orientation & mobility practices
- Assistive technology
- IEP processes and special education compliance
- Ability to work effectively within a collaborative educational team
- Must meet all federal, state, and local employment requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age
Preferred
- Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience working with students who have visual impairments in a school setting
Additional Requirements (If Applicable)
- Current CPR Certification
- Current TB Screening (questionnaire, PPD, or chest X-ray)
- Current Health Certificate, as required by state or district guidelines
