Job Description

The primary purpose of the Bankruptcy Research Clerk is to research new bankruptcy filings, review court documents, and prepare legal documentation for the firm's clients. This position is responsible for identifying delinquent tax accounts involved in bankruptcy proceedings, preparing Proofs of Claim and Notices of Appearance, updating case information in internal systems, and coordinating with attorneys, paralegals, and various jurisdictions to ensure accurate and timely case management.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy filings for delinquent taxes owed to clients.
  • Review bankruptcy petitions, schedules, Statements of Financial Affairs (SOFAs), amendments, and court filings.
  • Monitor incoming mail and emails for new bankruptcy cases requiring claims or amendments.
  • Prepare Proofs of Claim, Notices of Appearance, and amendments as needed.
  • Enter and maintain bankruptcy case information in internal systems (BankTool and Tax Tool).
  • Contact firm staff and government jurisdictions to obtain tax information and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with consumer case paralegals to prioritize urgent bankruptcy matters.
  • Review foreclosure listings for active bankruptcy cases.
  • Complete special projects and assist with additional research and administrative duties as assigned.
  • Follow company policies, attendance standards, and applicable regulations.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume workload.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Familiarity with Bankruptcy Schedules and Statements of Financial Affairs (SOFAs) preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment.
