Job Description
Commissioning / Mechanical Systems Engineer
The successful candidate will be a highly experienced commissioning and mechanical systems professional with a strong background in high-tech manufacturing and mission-critical facilities. The ideal candidate combines hands-on field expertise with strong technical documentation, project coordination, QA/QC, commissioning, and stakeholder-management capabilities.
This role requires an individual who can operate effectively in a highly regulated, technically complex environment; identify issues before they impact project milestones; coordinate multiple stakeholders; and drive mechanical systems through inspection, testing, commissioning, qualification, and final turnover.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Lead and manage commissioning activities for HVAC, wet mechanical, dry mechanical, and critical facility systems within high-tech manufacturing environments.
- Perform detailed inspections of critical process equipment, clean utilities, mechanical systems, and facility infrastructure to verify compliance with approved design documents, specifications, and project requirements.
- Verify the proper installation, operation, performance, and functionality of mechanical systems and components.
- Lead the testing, verification, and validation of HVAC systems, including system performance, controls, balancing, pressure relationships, dampers, valves, and associated components.
- Coordinate closely with design, engineering, construction, commissioning, QA/QC, and operations teams to ensure successful system turnover.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, HVAC, controls, and systems-related issues and coordinate corrective actions through resolution.
- Develop, execute, and manage testing and validation activities in accordance with approved commissioning plans, protocols, and project requirements.
- Ensure all commissioning and construction activities comply with applicable safety, environmental, building, and regulatory requirements.
- Interface daily with the General Contractor, trade contractors, vendors, engineers, commissioning teams, owners, and other project stakeholders.
- Lead interruption mitigation, risk identification, and contingency planning to minimize impacts to critical systems, construction activities, and project schedules.
- Review engineering documentation, construction drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, commissioning documents, and technical documentation for accuracy and compliance.
- Execute inspection and verification protocols and accurately document findings, deficiencies, corrective actions, and system status.
- Review vendor documentation, testing records, certifications, and equipment documentation for compliance with project requirements.
- Prepare detailed inspection reports, commissioning reports, punch lists, deficiency reports, and non-conformance reports (NCRs).
- Participate in project meetings, commissioning coordination meetings, schedule reviews, and milestone planning activities.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to clients, contractors, vendors, and project stakeholders regarding mechanical systems, commissioning requirements, and system performance.
- Support project planning, scheduling, procurement, subcontractor coordination, and overall execution as required.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in high-tech manufacturing or mission-critical environments, including semiconductor, biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical, advanced manufacturing, or data center facilities.
- Demonstrated expertise with HVAC and mechanical systems within high-tech manufacturing and controlled-environment facilities.
- Strong knowledge of process equipment, clean utilities, critical mechanical systems, and facility infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience with commissioning, qualification, testing, inspection, and system verification activities.
- Experience reviewing engineering documentation, technical specifications, drawings, equipment documentation, and vendor submittals.
- Strong technical writing, documentation, reporting, and record-keeping skills.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Working knowledge of Toxic Gas Exhaust (TGE), toxic gas monitoring, and gas treatment systems.
- Understanding of building automation systems (BAS), controls, instrumentation, and system interfaces.
- IRATA Level 1 Rope Access Technician certification preferred/required, as applicable to project scope.
- Familiarity with equipment vendor documentation, testing requirements, turnover packages, and commissioning documentation.
- Previous experience supporting or leading project management, construction management, or commissioning management activities.
