Asbestos Paralegal
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Asbestos Paralegal to support a busy mass torts and asbestos litigation practice. The Asbestos Paralegal will manage case files, conduct factual and medical investigations, assist attorneys with litigation tasks, and provide compassionate client support. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with asbestos and mesothelioma cases, strong litigation skills, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain asbestos and mass tort case files, including pleadings, discovery, medical records, and correspondence.
- Conduct detailed fact and exposure investigations, gathering work histories, employment records, military service records, and other relevant documentation.
- Draft, prepare, and file routine litigation documents including complaints, motions, affidavits, subpoenas, and settlement documents under attorney supervision.
- Coordinate medical record retrieval, summarize medical records, and work with treating physicians and medical experts to obtain necessary reports.
- Prepare and organize exhibits, witness lists, deposition binders, and trial notebooks; provide on-site trial and deposition support.
- Manage discovery processes: draft discovery requests and responses, review incoming discovery, and assist with eDiscovery platforms (e.g., Relativity, Concordance).
- Maintain and update case calendars, deadlines, statute of limitations tracking, and court schedule management.
- Communicate regularly and compassionately with clients and family members, scheduling interviews, providing status updates, and handling sensitive information with discretion.
- Assist with settlement demand preparation, analyze settlement offers, and prepare settlement documentation and releases.
- Support attorneys with legal research using Westlaw/ LexisNexis and assist in preparing briefs, memoranda, and case summaries.
- Coordinate billing and time reporting for litigation tasks and maintain accurate records for client files and firm databases.
- Collaborate with intake teams to evaluate new potential asbestos/mesothelioma claims and prepare initial case assessments.
Qualifications
- Associate degree, paralegal certificate, or equivalent legal training; Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of paralegal experience supporting asbestos, mesothelioma, mass torts, or complex litigation matters; experience in asbestos litigation strongly preferred.
- Proven knowledge of asbestos exposure issues, plaintiff-side litigation strategies, and mesothelioma case development.
- Strong drafting, organizational, and document-management skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Proficiency with eDiscovery tools (Relativity, Concordance, or similar), document management systems, and legal research platforms (Westlaw, LexisNexis).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact compassionately with vulnerable clients and families.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team in a high-volume practice.
- Experience preparing trial exhibits, deposition materials, and coordinating with expert witnesses.
- Familiarity with federal and state court procedures, filing requirements, and civil litigation timelines.
