Position Overview

A high-volume sawmill and cut-line facility in the greater Richmond, VA area is seeking a skilled and dependable Plant Mechanic / Millwright to support the day-to-day maintenance and repair of industrial equipment, systems, and facility infrastructure. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, open-air environment and brings a solid mechanical foundation, troubleshooting ability, and a willingness to grow with the team.

The Plant Mechanic / Millwright will be responsible for performing preventive maintenance, diagnosing and repairing breakdowns, supporting welding and fabrication projects, and working closely with other technicians to keep equipment running safely and efficiently. The role also supports the site’s transition toward a preventive maintenance (PM)-driven culture, utilizing the newly implemented system for tracking work orders and repairs.

Key Responsibilities

- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems on sawmill and material handling equipment.

- Perform preventive maintenance according to established schedules and document activities in the CMMS or tracking system.

- Conduct repairs and adjustments on conveyors, hydraulic pumps, industrial saws, HVAC units, and forklifts.

- Carry out welding and fabrication tasks, including stick welding, to build or repair machine frames, guards, and support structures.

- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and equipment manuals to guide troubleshooting and repairs.

- Replace or rebuild pumps, motors, drives, valves, and cylinders as needed.

- Operate forklifts and man lifts safely to complete maintenance tasks at height or in hard-to-reach areas.

- Collaborate with team members and leadership to ensure timely, safe completion of repairs.

- Maintain a clean and safe work area and follow OSHA and facility-specific safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout.

Qualifications

- Minimum 3 years of experience in industrial maintenance, millwright work, or equipment repair in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.

- Solid hands-on experience with mechanical systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, pumps, and conveyors.

- Proficient in welding and fabrication, including stick welding for structural repairs and custom builds.

- Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.

- Able to read and understand blueprints, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals.

- Working knowledge of basic electrical troubleshooting is a plus.

- Familiarity with CMMS or digital maintenance tracking systems preferred; basic computer skills required.

- Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs, work in an open-air, dusty environment, and adapt to changing schedules or priorities.

- Valid driver’s license required; must be able to pass a drug test.

- Spanish language skills a plus.

- Open to training and growth—willing to teach the right mechanically inclined candidate with the right attitude.
