Job Description

Sober Companion
CST Care Team a branch of Caring & Secure Transport (CST)

Classification: 1099 Independent Contractor

Hours: Flexible scheduling based on client needs. Assignments can range from a single transport lasting an hour or two, to extended day sessions of 8-12 hours, to overnight stays with a client. Weekly caseload typically runs 24-48 hours, with a minimum of 24 hours/week. Companions with capacity and availability for overnight work may take on additional hours.

About the Role

CST is seeking Sober Companions to provide one-on-one support to clients working to maintain sobriety across all stages of recovery, including clients stepping down from 24/7 residential care, those currently in IOP or PHP, clients in sober living, and clients in their own homes. The companion acts as the on-the-ground support person between clinical care and daily life, helping clients build structure, attend required meetings and appointments, and develop sustainable recovery habits.

Some clients also have co-occurring needs such as developmental disabilities, autism, or traumatic brain injury. Experience in those areas is a strong plus but not a substitute for recovery-space experience, which is the core requirement for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct one-on-one support during scheduled shifts, tailored to each client's recovery plan
  • Transport clients to AA/NA meetings, group sessions, medical appointments, and errands (groceries, day program, etc.)
  • Assist with medication compliance and monitoring — companions do not administer medication
  • Assess each client's situation and help develop a week-by-week plan to support their recovery goals
  • Support clients in building healthy daily routines: eating habits, financial habits, organization, and cleanliness
  • For established long-term clients, carry out the existing care plan and report on progress
  • Complete accurate end-of-shift documentation in compliance with HIPAA
  • Relay relevant information between the client and CST's clinical team, functioning as the primary point of contact on the ground
  • Recognize and respond to signs of relapse risk or crisis using appropriate intervention techniques

Requirements

  • Personal sobriety required. If the candidate has their own history of substance use recovery, a minimum of 5 years of continuous sobriety is required. CST maintains a zero-tolerance policy for relapse while employed in this role
  • Clean background check required
  • Clean driving record required
  • Experience working in the recovery/addiction space (required) — e.g., sober companion, recovery coach, mental health technician, or similar
  • Additional experience in ABA therapy, special education, or working with developmental disabilities is a plus, but not a substitute for recovery experience
  • Working knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working as a liaison between clinical staff and clients
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license (role includes regular client transport)
  • Willingness and availability to work overnight shifts as needed
  • Ability to maintain HIPAA-compliant documentation
  • Ability to independently assess client needs and adapt support week to week
