About this job
Job Description
We are seeking a Sr. Internal Auditor to join our Internal Audit team. This role goes beyond traditional compliance-focused auditing — we need someone with solid working knowledge of how the business operates, from front-line processes to strategic objectives, and who can translate that understanding into meaningful risk-based audit insight. You don't need to be a subject-matter expert in every business line, but you should be able to speak the business's language and understand how their day-to-day decisions connect to risk.
You'll act as a trusted advisor and challenge function, helping the business anticipate risk rather than simply reporting on it after the fact.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner directly with business unit leaders (e.g., retail banking, commercial lending, wealth management, operations, treasury) to build a working understanding of their strategy, products, processes, and key risks
- Plan and execute risk-based audits that assess the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls across business and support functions
- Identify emerging risks by staying current on business initiatives, market conditions, regulatory changes, and industry trends affecting the bank
- Evaluate the adequacy of governance, risk management, and control processes relative to business objectives, not just checklist compliance
- Develop audit findings that are practical, risk-prioritized, and actionable, with clear root-cause analysis
- Present audit results and recommendations to business management and, as needed, senior leadership and the Audit Committee
- Track remediation of prior audit issues and validate that corrective actions effectively address underlying risks
- Contribute to the annual risk assessment and audit plan by providing business-informed input on risk areas
- Collaborate with Compliance, Risk Management, and Operational Risk teams to avoid duplication and ensure a holistic view of risk
- Maintain audit documentation in accordance with professional standards (IIA Standards) and internal audit methodology
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in internal audit, risk management, or a relevant banking/financial services business role (e.g., lending, operations, product management)
- Working knowledge of banking products, services, and business processes (deposits, lending, payments, treasury, etc.) — deep subject-matter expertise not required
- Working knowledge of banking operations and/or regulations.
- Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to connect business context to control risk
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence non-audit stakeholders
- Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines independently
