Job Description
BASIC FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:
- Assists in the delivery of peri-operative nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
- Performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties.
- Participates in Quality Improvement.
- Communicates and collaborates to maintain quality patient care.
- Works collaboratively with the Operating Room team to coordinate and complete the surgical schedule.
- Competently performs unit specific skills.
- Demonstrates ability to process clinical data and communicates to licensed nursing staff to facilitate clinical decisions.
- Assists with surgical counts during operative procedures.
- Observes and reports contamination and/or break in aseptic technique.
- Anticipates needs of surgeon and surgical team during procedures.
- Regularly assists in positioning, preparing and draping of patient.
- Demonstrates a complete knowledge of the location, care and operation of surgical equipment.
- Takes emergency call on a rotating basis.
- Demonstrates familiarity of role, performs duties accurately, recognizing the importance and relationship to quality patient care.
- Promotes good public relations for the nursing department/hospital.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent. BLS training.
LICENSE: NONE
CREDENTIALS: Certified Surgical Technician required.
EXPERIENCE: Previous surgical experience or completion of Surgical Technologist equivalent program.
SPECIAL:
PATIENT CONTACT: Must have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
STANDING: Majority of shift spent standing.
WALKING: Considerable amount of time spent walking.
LIFTING: Must use good body mechanics to independently lift or in certain situations, assist with lifting/transferring a patient.
VISUAL: Must have ability to visualize operative field/suite.
HEARING: Must be able to receive and comprehend verbal communication.
SPEAKING: Talking is essential for communicating with the patient and surgical team members in the operating suite and in receiving physician’s orders.
