Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to oversee the company’s accounting and financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for accurate financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, job costing, WIP analysis, tax compliance, and financial planning. This is a hands-on position requiring strong knowledge of construction or electrical contracting accounting and the ability to work closely with senior management and project teams.


Responsibilities

  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting and financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and reconciliations.
  • Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes and ensure timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements, including Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow statements.
  • Review and reconcile all general ledger accounts and prepare necessary month-end journal entries, including accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, insurance, interest, bonuses, and other adjustments.
  • Develop and maintain accurate Work in Progress (WIP), job costing, and project profitability reports.
  • Analyze job costs, project performance, labor costs, material costs, change orders, and gross margins.
  • Work closely with Project Managers, Estimators, Operations, and senior management to identify discrepancies and improve financial performance.
  • Prepare annual budgets, forecasts, and reforecasts and monitor actual results against budget.
  • Manage weekly cash flow projections and cash balances, including monitoring DSO and DPO.
  • Assist with banking relationships, financing, insurance, and other financial matters.
  • Coordinate with the company’s external CPA firm on year-end financial statements, tax filings, audits, and other accounting matters.
  • Oversee sales tax, use tax, and other applicable tax filings and payments.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal accounting controls and procedures.
  • Provide senior management with financial analysis, reporting, and recommendations to support business decisions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, cash flow, and profitability.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting principles, tax regulations, and company policies.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with Controller-level experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience within electrical contracting, construction, HVAC, mechanical contracting, or a similar project-based industry strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of job costing, WIP accounting, project accounting, and percentage-of-completion concepts.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong experience with accounting/ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet strict monthly reporting deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with senior management and operational teams.
  • Hands-on, detail-oriented approach with the ability to work independently.

 

Location: Staten Island, NY
Schedule: Fully in office, Monday through Friday
