Job Description
Make a meaningful impact supporting students with visual impairments in a dynamic educational environment. This contract opportunity offers the chance to work across multiple sites, consulting and teaching in collaboration with school staff and families. You'll play a critical role in promoting independence, accessibility, and academic achievement for learners in both direct and consultative settings.
Assignment Details:
- Start as soon as possible; position runs through December 18, 2026, with the possibility of extension for the full school year
- Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM
- Work across multiple district buildings, currently assigned to three schools each for TVI (Teacher of the Visually Impaired) and O&M (Orientation & Mobility) services (assignments may adjust as needed)
Qualifications & Desired Experience:
- Valid certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and/or Orientation & Mobility Specialist, meeting Illinois state requirements
- Strong understanding of Braille instruction, assistive technology, and adaptive resources for visually impaired students
- Experience in developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs)
- Effective interpersonal skills to build relationships with diverse student, staff, and family populations
- Flexibility to travel between school sites within the district
- Commitment to fostering inclusive learning environments
Role Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver specialized instruction for students who are blind or have vision loss
- Conduct assessments and write progress reports for educational teams
- Collaborate with general educators to promote accessible classroom practices
- Provide orientation and mobility training to support student independence
- Consult with families, other professionals, and staff on best practices, tools, and environmental modifications
- Support transitions between grade levels and new educational settings
