Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Special Projects Construction Manager to lead a growing commercial mechanical Special Projects Division. This role combines department leadership with hands-on project management, estimating support, customer development, and operational oversight.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in commercial mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, or related construction management, along with proven leadership experience and the ability to manage projects from preconstruction through closeout.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the daily operations of the Special Projects Department.
Manage, coach, and develop Project Managers, Project Engineers, and project support staff.
Establish department priorities and effectively allocate resources.
Personally manage strategic, high-value, or technically complex projects.
Oversee project schedules, manpower, procurement, subcontractors, budgets, and execution.
Ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards.
Develop and maintain long-term relationships with owners and customers.
Support design-build, negotiated, and repeat-business opportunities.
Participate in customer meetings, proposals, and business development activities.
Review conceptual budgets, estimates, scopes, and project pursuits.
Support estimating and improve the transition from estimating to project operations.
Monitor project profitability, WIP, forecasting, billing, and cost-to-complete.
Review change orders and identify financial or operational risks.
Improve departmental processes, reporting, and workflow efficiency.
Champion company safety standards and ensure compliance with OSHA and contract requirements.
Conduct periodic jobsite visits and promote quality workmanship and customer satisfaction.
Required Qualifications
7+ years of experience in commercial mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, or related construction management.
3+ years of leadership experience managing project teams.
Experience managing commercial mechanical projects from preconstruction through closeout.
Strong understanding of estimating, scheduling, procurement, contracts, and project financials.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with design-build and negotiated projects.
Knowledge of California prevailing wage and public works requirements.
Experience with Spectrum ERP, Bluebeam, Procore, or similar construction software.
Commercial mechanical design or engineering experience.
Experience with customer development, proposals, and repeat business.
