Description:

The Director of Safety is an important leader in the Good Shepherd community, enhancing the commitment to providing a safe and secure environment, grounded in a Christ-centered culture of trust, care, and faith, for all individuals interacting with the parish and school. This individual is a steady presence and source of trusted guidance on best practices in safety and security. They are a confident and kind communicator, able to interact with various audiences of all age groups and build meaningful connections within the Good Shepherd and larger Archdiocese and Denver law enforcement communities. The Director is eager to share knowledge and create opportunities for all members of the Good Shepherd community to participate in safety practices and foster a culture of collective care.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Duties - % of time spent

Strategy, policy, and compliance - 40%

Active patrol, supervision, and response - 40%

Training and volunteer management - 20%


SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Strategy, Policy, and Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and annually update the Campus Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), including relevant aspects of Standard Response Protocol (SRP), RedBag Communication Tool, and PRePARE.
  • Establish and maintain Incident Command System (ICS) protocols for school and parish operations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, guidance, and best practices.
  • Prepare reports/presentations for leadership, safety committees, and (as appropriate) school boards/finance councils.
  • Lead hazard mitigation projects (e.g., secure vestibules, door hardening, traffic flow redesign, emergency comms upgrades, etc.).

Active Patrol, Supervision, and Response

  • Maintain a visible presence across campus (arrival/dismissal, liturgies, recess, events, athletics, after-care, evening/weekend parish activities) to deter risks and promote safety.
  • Monitor radios, cameras, and access control systems; respond to alarms, incidents, and medical needs; complete incident reports and after-action reviews.
  • Manage daily opening/closing routines, perimeter checks, and special coverage for high traffic times and special events.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire, and EMS as necessary.
  • Maintain a risk register and safety metrics drills, incidents, training completion, corrective actions).


Training and Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and oversee parent/parish safety volunteers for carline, recess, hall monitoring, events, and Mass.
  • Create and deliver annual and recurring, age-appropriate training for faculty, staff, volunteers, and students on emergency procedures (e.g., fire, lockdown, secure, shelter, evacuation, medical emergencies, reunification).
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and document all drills to meet/exceed state and diocesan requirements (e.g., fire, lockdown/ALICE or Run Hide Fight concepts, severe weather).
  • Provide or coordinate training in SRP, Stop the Bleed, ICS basics, radio communications, visitor screening, and duty specific volunteer training.


COMPETENCIES:

  • To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate:
  • Certification and high level of skill in handling a concealed weapon, as necessary.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, policies, and procedures.
  • High level of critical thinking and analytical skills to identify appropriate solutions.
  • Discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive information and privileged communications.
  • Ability to maintain composure in high stress situations
  • Professionalism and ability to communicate with various audiences of all ages.
  • Confidence to speak or write clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations.
  • Strong teamwork skills.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:


Required

  • 5 years' experience in security administration, law enforcement, or other relevant field.
  • Experience creating and communicating policy and procedures.
  • Experience creating and leading training.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.


Preferred

  • Be a fully initiated Catholic in the communion of the Catholic Church with a strong desire to serve others.
  • Experience recruiting and managing volunteers.
  • College degree in relevant field.
  • Experience working with Catholic schools/churches.
