Position Title: Phlebotomist Float
Location: Austin, TX & Surrounding Areas
Training: 2+ weeks
Work Environment: PSC / IOP
Shift : 8 to 5 Mon to Fri

Position Summary
We are seeking a Phlebotomist responsible for performing blood draws and supporting specimen collection and processing in a fast-paced patient service environment. The candidate will perform venipunctures using straight and/or butterfly needles, properly label and process specimens, verify physician orders and requisitions, and prepare specimens for transport. The role also requires strong patient communication, attention to detail, customer service, and compliance with OSHA/ESH requirements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture/blood draws using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Collect urine, fecal, and other specimens as required.
  • Properly explain the specimen collection process to patients.
  • Match laboratory requisitions with the correct specimen tubes.
  • Verify test requisitions/computer labels against physician orders.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test requirements.
  • Store specimens at the required temperature.
  • Package specimens for transportation while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Update patient information.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination.
  • Follow established specimen collection, processing, and transportation protocols.
  • Comply with OSHA/ESH regulations.
  • Attend required annual department training.
  • Answer telephone calls and assist with laboratory-related inquiries.
Required Qualifications
  • Phlebotomy experience / venipuncture experience required.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Experience with specimen labeling, processing, packing, and shipping.
  • Knowledge of OSHA/ESH compliance.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with pediatric through geriatric patients.
  • Ability to work in a PSC/IOP environment.
  • Ability to travel between assigned locations as this is a float position.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • Phlebotomy certification is preferred, but not required.

  • Excellent communication and patient-service skills.
Work Environment
  • Onsite position.
  • PSC/IOP environment.
  • Approximately 20-40 draws per day, depending on location/workload.
  • Patient population ranges from pediatric to geriatric.
  • Location size, standing requirements, and team structure may vary.
  • Float position requiring travel to additional assigned locations within the Austin area.
  • Training is expected to be 2 or more weeks.
