Mechanic

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of diversified automotive equipment. An employee in this class performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy equipment, automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other types of motorized equipment.  Work involves making repairs and adjustments to valves, carburetors, and generators; and overhauling major engine parts such as differentials, clutch assemblies, and steering mechanisms. Assignments, in the form of oral instructions or written work orders, are received from a superior who may also provide some direction to more difficult work.  Work is performed in accordance with standard procedures and practices of the mechanical trades and requires independent judgment and initiative in detecting malfunctions and in solving mechanical problems. Limited supervision may be exercised over a mechanic’s helper.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Outside Operations Assistant/Outside Operations Superintendent and is evaluated through inspections and observations based on the operational efficiency of vehicles and equipment repaired and serviced.
