Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) – Watertown, NY

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Surgical First Assistant to provide direct support to surgeons during operative procedures. This role involves assisting with exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions to help ensure safe surgeries and optimal outcomes, along with pre- and postoperative patient care.

Shift Details

• Hours: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Pay Range
$43.63 – $71.99/hr

Unit Information

Key Responsibilities

Preoperative:

• Review/prepare surgical plans and patient history
• Assist in positioning, prepping, and draping the patient
• Ensure all instruments and supplies are sterile and available
• Coordinate with RN and surgical tech on patient plan

Intraoperative:

• Provide surgical site exposure using retractors and tools
• Control bleeding via clamping, ligating, or cauterizing
• Handle tissue, cut sutures, and assist with wound closure
• Suction, irrigate, and assist with robotic/laparoscopic/minimally invasive procedures
• Monitor patient vitals as directed by the surgical team

Postoperative:

• Apply surgical dressings and assist with patient transfer to recovery
• Ensure accurate sponge/instrument counts
• Document procedures and participate in postoperative assessments and wound care

Requirements

• Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a healthcare-related field
• Graduation from an accredited Surgical First Assistant program
• Minimum 2 years of experience in a surgical setting; scrub experience a plus
• Strong knowledge of surgical instruments, anatomy, and aseptic technique
• Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
• Ability to remain calm and focused in high-stress situations
• Comfortable with long periods of standing and exposure to blood/bodily fluids
• Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA), OR
• Physician Assistant (NCCPA), OR
• Nurse Practitioner (NCCNP with surgical certification)
