Job Description
The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) serves as the Safety Manager on federal construction projects and plays a critical role in upholding Environmental, Health & Safety and risk control policies across all jobsites. This role leads the development and implementation of safety programs, proactively identifies and mitigates hazards, and drives a strong, compliant safety culture throughout the organization and on each project site.
Responsibilities- Lead and manage safety programs and processes on federal construction projects, ensuring full compliance with Environmental, Health & Safety and risk control policies.
- Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific safety plans and procedures that align with OSHA and federal construction requirements.
- Conduct regular jobsite safety inspections and audits to identify potential exposures, hazards, and unsafe conditions.
- Proactively identify known and potential safety and environmental exposures and lead the implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Provide ongoing safety training, coaching, and guidance to project teams, subcontractors, and field personnel, including OSHA-related and site safety topics.
- Promote and foster a strong safety culture across the organization by encouraging safe work practices and reinforcing safety expectations.
- Monitor construction activities to ensure adherence to safety standards, regulations, and company policies, intervening when necessary to prevent incidents.
- Maintain accurate and timely safety documentation, including inspection reports, incident reports, training records, and compliance logs.
- Coordinate and support incident investigations, root cause analyses, and follow-up actions to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure that required safety certifications and training for personnel, including First Aid/CPR/BBP and AED, remain current and properly documented.
- Collaborate with project leadership and field teams to integrate safety considerations into planning, scheduling, and execution of construction work.
- Stay current on safety and environmental principles, techniques, and regulatory changes, and apply this knowledge to continuous improvement of safety processes.
- Four-year degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years dedicated solely to building construction safety.
- Minimum of 5 years of construction safety process management experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of actual field experience in safety on construction sites.
- OSHA 30 certification.
- OSHA 500 or OSHA 502 training.
- Strong site safety expertise in construction and federal construction environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety and environmental principles and techniques.
- Current First Aid, CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training, valid within the last 2 years.
- Proven ability to identify known and potential safety exposures and lead the implementation of effective corrective actions.
- Commitment to achieving Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation within 2 years of appointment to this position.
- Ability to provide safety training and communicate safety requirements clearly to diverse field and project teams.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills focused on safety outcomes.
- Experience working on federal construction projects and familiarity with federal safety standards and requirements.
- Background in construction management or engineering that supports understanding of building construction processes and hazards.
- Experience developing and delivering safety training programs for construction personnel.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with project teams while maintaining authority on safety matters.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple safety processes, documentation, and compliance activities across jobsites.
- Continuous improvement mindset with the ability to evaluate existing safety programs and recommend enhancements.
- Professional safety certifications such as ASP or CSP are highly valued once obtained.
This role operates primarily in active construction environments on federal projects, with regular presence on jobsites to observe work activities, conduct inspections, and interact closely with field personnel. The position involves working around typical construction equipment, materials, and operations, requiring consistent awareness of site conditions and hazards. Work hours generally follow standard construction schedules, with flexibility to support safety needs, meetings, and incident response as required. The work environment emphasizes a strong safety culture, structured safety processes, and adherence to OSHA and federal safety regulations. Appropriate safety attire and personal protective equipment are required on jobsites, and safety training and certifications are actively maintained as part of the role.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $60.00 - $65.00/hr.
