Job Title: Service Attendant
Reports To: General Manager
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Work Location: On-Site
Employment Type: Full-Time and/or Part-Time, as assigned
Position Summary
The Service Attendant is responsible for providing friendly and efficient customer service while supporting the daily operation, cleanliness, safety, and security of the service station and convenience store. This position performs a variety of customer service, cashiering, food service, stocking, cleaning, fuel-service, and general operational duties.
Service Attendants are expected to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for customers, accurately process transactions, follow all cash handling and safety procedures, and assist with other operational needs as assigned. Because the business operates in a customer-facing environment with varying staffing needs, employees must be able to work independently and as part of a team while maintaining a high level of reliability, professionalism, and attention to safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential duties and responsibilities of the Service Attendant include, but are not limited to:
Customer Service and Fuel Operations
- Greet customers and provide courteous, professional, and timely service.
- Assist customers with fuel purchases, pump operation, and other service needs.
- Provide full-service fueling assistance to customers when required, including safely dispensing fuel in accordance with Company procedures.
- Monitor fuel pump areas and promptly report spills, equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, or suspicious activity.
- Respond appropriately to customer questions, concerns, or complaints and escalate issues to management when necessary.
- Follow established procedures for handling difficult, disruptive, or potentially unsafe customer situations.
- Maintain awareness of activity throughout the store and fuel service areas to support customer and employee safety.
Cash Register and Point-of-Sale Operations
- Operate the cash register and point-of-sale (POS) system accurately and efficiently.
- Process cash, credit/debit card, fuel, and other authorized transactions.
- Provide correct change and receipts and maintain accuracy when handling customer payments.
- Follow Company procedures for cash drawers, cash drops, refunds, voids, discounts, and other transactions.
- Balance assigned cash drawers and promptly report shortages, overages, or transaction discrepancies.
- Verify identification and age when required for the sale of age-restricted products.
- Follow all Company policies and applicable laws regarding the sale of age-restricted products.
Food and Beverage Service
- Prepare, handle, package, stock, and serve food and beverage items in accordance with Company procedures and applicable food safety requirements.
- Maintain clean and sanitary food preparation, serving, and storage areas.
- Monitor food quality, temperature, expiration dates, and product rotation as required.
- Operate authorized food preparation and beverage equipment in accordance with training and safety procedures.
- Wash hands, use required protective equipment, and follow appropriate sanitation and food-handling practices.
- Immediately report food safety, sanitation, equipment, or contamination concerns to management.
Stocking and Inventory
- Receive, stock, organize, rotate, and replenish merchandise, food, beverages, supplies, and other inventory.
- Ensure products are properly displayed, labeled, priced, and maintained in an orderly manner.
- Monitor inventory levels and notify management when products or supplies require replenishment.
- Check products for damage, expiration, or other conditions that make them unsuitable for sale.
- Assist with deliveries, inventory counts, and other inventory-control activities as assigned.
- Follow Company procedures designed to prevent theft, waste, and inventory loss.
Cleaning and Facility Maintenance
- Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the store, fuel pump areas, parking areas, restrooms, food service areas, and other assigned spaces.
- Sweep, mop, wipe surfaces, empty trash, clean spills, sanitize high-touch areas, and perform other routine cleaning duties.
- Clean and maintain restrooms throughout the shift in accordance with Company standards.
- Maintain fuel pump islands and surrounding areas in a clean and safe condition.
- Promptly address or report spills, broken equipment, trip hazards, leaks, or other unsafe conditions.
- Use cleaning products, equipment, and personal protective equipment in accordance with Company safety procedures.
- Perform light general maintenance tasks within the employee's training and authorization and report repair needs to management.
Safety, Security, and Loss Prevention
- Follow all Company safety, security, emergency, robbery prevention, and loss prevention procedures.
- Follow established procedures when working around fuel, cleaning chemicals, food preparation equipment, and other potentially hazardous materials or equipment.
- Remain alert to suspicious activity, theft, fraud, unsafe conditions, and security concerns and report them promptly.
- Follow cash security and safe-drop procedures as required.
- Respond appropriately to fuel spills, fire, severe weather, medical emergencies, robbery, theft, or other emergency situations in accordance with Company procedures and training.
- Never pursue, physically confront, or attempt to apprehend individuals suspected of theft or criminal activity.
- Report workplace injuries, accidents, near misses, property damage, and safety concerns immediately.
- Maintain required access controls and safeguard keys, passwords, cash, Company property, and restricted areas.
General Operations
- Report to work on time and remain available for the full scheduled shift.
- Complete opening, closing, and shift-handover responsibilities as assigned.
- Communicate important operational, customer, safety, cash, inventory, or equipment information to management and incoming employees.
- Follow all Company policies, procedures, safety requirements, and management instructions.
- Participate in required training and maintain knowledge of procedures applicable to assigned duties.
- Assist coworkers and management with operational needs to maintain appropriate customer service and store coverage.
- Perform other job-related duties consistent with the position as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Ability to provide professional and courteous customer service.
- Ability to accurately handle cash and complete basic mathematical calculations.
- Ability to learn and operate POS systems, fuel-related systems, and other equipment used in the position.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established safety procedures.
- Ability to work independently and exercise appropriate judgment when management is not immediately present.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, and management.
- Ability to maintain reliability, punctuality, and regular attendance.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Ability to safely perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred
- Previous experience in a gas station, convenience store, retail, restaurant, food service, or other customer-facing environment.
- Previous cash handling or POS experience.
- Previous food handling experience.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
The Service Attendant must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
The position regularly requires standing and walking for extended periods; bending, reaching, stooping, and performing repetitive movements; handling merchandise, supplies, food products, and equipment; and moving items throughout the store and service areas.
The position may require lifting, carrying, pushing, or otherwise moving merchandise, supplies, trash, and other materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying temperatures, weather conditions, vehicle traffic, fuel odors or fumes, cleaning products, food preparation areas, wet or slippery surfaces, and other conditions commonly associated with service station and convenience store operations.
Employees must be able to safely work around customers, vehicles, fuel dispensing areas, food service equipment, and other operational equipment and conditions.
Additional Requirements
Employees must comply with all Company policies and applicable safety, food handling, cash handling, age-restricted sales, and operational requirements.
Certain duties may be restricted based on an employee's age or other applicable legal requirements. Employees under the age of eighteen (18) will only be assigned duties and work hours permitted under applicable federal and Georgia youth employment laws.
