Work Schedule: Mon – Fri | 6:30 am – 3:15 pm

Note: Required to work hours other than regular schedule such as days, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call and rotating shifts.

Job Summary
The Utility Technician is responsible for a variety of manual and semi-skilled labor duties for the repair, construction, and maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collection system.

  • Outline Essential Functions / Job Duties:
    • Weir Cleaning, consist of scrubbing Algae from walls, pulling weeds and pressure washing. ( Confined Space, LOTO)
    • Clarifier Tanks, at all plants, scrubbing Algae from walls pressure washing removal of sludge and debris when tanks are drained. (Confined Space, LOTO)
    • Aeration Basins and Settling Tank/Finals, removing of sludge and debris that accumulate at the bottom of tanks and draft tubes when tanks are drained. ( Confined Space, LOTO)
    • MLSS Channels, at all Plants set in stop logs, set up trash pumps to drain channel clean out sludge and debris. (Confined Space, LOTO)
    • Sludge Spills 1 st responders clean up.
    • Please keep in mind that during the summertime utility techs spend about 80% of their time cleaning weirs and tank cleaning due to the heat and algae bloom.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs manual labor work to include installation of pipes and fittings for the repair, construction, and maintenance of water and wastewater systems.
  • May operate front-end loaders, skid loaders and any other equipment assigned of similar size and complexity.
  • Excavates and backfills trenches in order to complete repairs.
  • Transports equipment, tools, and materials to and from job sites, in compliance with Texas Department of Public Safety Rules.
  • Loads and unloads materials from trucks.
  • Stocks vehicle with necessary equipment and material.
  • Cleans, organizes and maintains facilities, tools and equipment.
  • Observes and promotes all established safety procedures.
  • Interprets maps.
  • Assists with the setup of work zone barricades and signs for traffic control.
  • Inventories tools, equipment and materials.
  • May provide training on the proper usage of tools and equipment.
  • Adheres to any and all workplace safety rules and standards. Willing to report unsafe working conditions and stop work if needed to prevent accidents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Decision Making:

  • This position receives immediate supervision.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Valid Texas Class "C” Driver's License or obtain within six months of employment/assignment.
  • Pass specific physical testing.
  • Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.

Job Dimensions:

  • Knowledge of operating characteristics and safety procedures for equipment being operated.
  • Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment typically used in maintenance or construction.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety measures as they apply to the type of work being performed.
  • Knowledge of SAWS safety practices and procedures, including traffic control.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and general public.
