Job Title: Geotechnical Engineer / InspectorJob Description

This role focuses on supporting field-based engineering and construction projects through geotechnical inspections, construction materials testing, site observations, and detailed field documentation. You will spend significant time on active project sites collecting data, evaluating construction activities, and ensuring compliance with engineering specifications and project requirements. This position is well suited for individuals who enjoy hands-on technical work, working outdoors, and contributing directly to the delivery of infrastructure and engineering projects.

Responsibilities
  • Perform geotechnical inspections on active project sites to verify site conditions, soil conditions, and adherence to engineering specifications and project requirements.
  • Conduct construction materials testing (CMT) on soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials, accurately documenting all test results.
  • Collect and record field data including site measurements, observations, photographs, sample logs, and detailed field notes to support engineering analyses and recommendations.
  • Obtain representative soil samples and assist with soil classification and testing procedures in accordance with established standards and protocols.
  • Prepare clear and accurate daily reports, field logs, inspection records, and testing documentation for use by engineering and project teams.
  • Inspect construction work for compliance with plans, specifications, and quality requirements, and communicate findings to engineers and project stakeholders.
  • Support geotechnical engineers during subsurface and engineering field investigations, including observations and project execution activities.
  • Work safely around active construction operations, consistently following company and site-specific safety policies and procedures.
  • Use GPS survey equipment and other field instruments to support data collection and geotechnical investigations as needed.
  • Assist with environmental sampling and geotechnical laboratory testing activities related to soil, asphalt, and other construction materials.
  • Maintain organized records of test results, inspection activities, and geotechnical analyses using appropriate documentation tools and software.
  • Communicate inspection results, safety concerns, and site observations effectively to project managers, engineers, and other technical professionals.
Essential Skills
  • Experience performing geotechnical inspections and field observations on construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Hands-on experience with construction materials testing (CMT), including soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Proficiency in field data collection, including measurements, photographs, sample logs, and detailed field notes.
  • Ability to obtain and handle soil samples and support soil testing and classification in accordance with established standards.
  • Strong skills in geotechnical documentation and reporting, including daily reports, inspection records, and testing documentation.
  • Solid understanding of construction site safety practices and the ability to work safely in active construction environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications accurately.
  • Strong written documentation and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaboration with project teams.
  • Comfort working independently in the field while managing multiple tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ability to lift field equipment and perform physical work on construction sites as required.
  • Knowledge of sampling, testing, and inspection procedures relevant to geotechnical and construction materials testing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for preparing reports, logs, and documentation.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project field locations as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Familiarity with ACI and NICET certifications related to construction materials testing and inspection.
  • Experience using nuclear density gauges for soil and asphalt compaction testing.
  • Experience with asphalt testing and related inspection procedures.
  • Comfort using GPS survey equipment for field data collection and site measurements.
  • Exposure to environmental sampling and geotechnical laboratory testing processes.
  • Understanding of Department of Transportation (DOT) standards and requirements related to materials testing and inspection.
  • Interest in building specialized expertise in geotechnical inspection, testing, and analysis.
  • Desire to work closely with engineers and technical professionals on complex infrastructure and construction projects.
  • Motivation to gain experience with a wide variety of geotechnical and construction project types.
Work Environment

This position operates in a combination of office and field environments based out of Bear, Delaware, with frequent site visits and field inspections. You will work regularly on active construction sites, where you may encounter varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, and ongoing heavy equipment operations. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required depending on project site conditions, and adherence to safety protocols is essential. Travel requirements are minimal, generally less than 2%, but you will spend a significant portion of your time outdoors performing inspections, sampling, and testing activities. In the office setting, you will prepare reports, review project documentation, and collaborate with engineers and technical staff using standard office technology and software.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $45.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
