Make a Difference While Helping Adults Live More Independently! The Arc of Greater Prince William/INSIGHT, Inc. is seeking a dependable, compassionate, and motivated Direct Support Professional (DSP) to join our Supported Living Program.

This is a community-based position, not a traditional facility-based DSP role. Much of the work takes place in individuals' apartments, townhomes, and throughout the community. DSPs should be comfortable working independently, traveling between locations, and supporting individuals in real-world daily living activities. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working independently, building positive relationships, and helping others increase their independence and quality of life.

Our Supported Living Program serves adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) who live semi-independently in apartments and townhomes throughout the community. As a DSP, you will provide individualized, person-centered support that helps people build independent living skills, achieve personal goals, make informed choices, and participate meaningfully in their communities.

What You'll Do

As a DSP in our Supported Living Program, you will:

  • Coach and support individuals in developing everyday independent living skills.
  • Assist with meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, budgeting, banking, housekeeping, laundry, and apartment maintenance.
  • Help individuals schedule and attend medical appointments and other important activities.
  • Support individuals in pursuing employment, education, volunteer opportunities, recreation, and community activities.
  • Encourage choice, self-advocacy, problem-solving, and increased independence.
  • Provide safe and reliable transportation to appointments, work, shopping, activities, and community events.
  • Support personal care, hygiene, health, and medical needs while maintaining each individual's dignity and privacy.
  • Administer medications when trained and certified to do so.
  • Follow Individual Support Plans (ISPs), behavior support plans, nursing protocols, and other individualized support strategies.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and other urgent situations in accordance with training and agency procedures.
  • Complete accurate and timely electronic documentation in THERAP.
  • Maintain the health, safety, welfare, dignity, and rights of the individuals you support.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized living environments.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals, families, coworkers, healthcare providers, landlords, and other community partners.
  • Participate in required meetings, supervision, training, and competency requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate agency vehicles.
  • Ability to successfully complete required criminal background checks and health screenings.
  • Ability to complete required training and certifications, including CPR, First Aid, AED, and Medication Administration Training (MAT), when applicable.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn electronic documentation systems such as THERAP.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to work independently in community-based settings and exercise sound judgment.

Experience supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities is valuable, but equally important is a willingness to learn, follow individualized support plans, and provide respectful, person-centered support.

Physical & Work Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform CPR, First Aid, and AED procedures.
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, push, and pull as needed.
  • Navigate stairs, apartments, townhomes, and community environments.
  • Participate in community activities for extended periods.
  • Safely operate an agency vehicle.
  • Travel between individuals' homes and community locations throughout the workday.

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and/or mental health challenges, or transferrable skills that relate to serving this population (such as experience in education, caregiving, health care, other human services or customer service);
  • Ability to pass criminal background check
  • Ability to pass required trainings
  • A Valid driver’s license, minimum three-year acceptable driving record and reliable transportation;
  • A High school diploma or GED;

Working Conditions

  • Work in residential group homes, day programs, and in the community
