About the Role
The Authorization Specialist/Unit Coordinator provides administrative and clerical support for clinical services. This role helps ensure individuals are registered for services, insurance coverage is verified, authorizations are obtained, and unit operations run smoothly through strong coordination with clinical staff.
This position is an excellent fit for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, collaborative, and committed to supporting efficient access to behavioral health services.
What You'll Do
- Register individuals for services, including Medicaid eligibility verification, health plan enrollment, and confirmation of third-party insurance coverage.
- Collect appropriate authorizations and release of information documentation.
- Verify insurance at admission, re-verify coverage for longer stays, and confirm coverage prior to discharge and claim submission.
- Obtain initial authorizations for treatment and assist with Medicaid applications as needed.
- Monitor pending Medicaid applications, identify coverage changes, and obtain updated insurance information from individuals or families.
- Support step-downs from other inpatient facilities by reviewing and obtaining initial authorization.
- Obtain clinical records and communicate needed information to physicians, nurses, and clinical team members.
- Serve as a key communication link between departments and disciplines to support smooth unit functioning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in a human services field or related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in inpatient utilization management, behavioral health, care coordination, and/or case management for high-risk populations.
- Experience with commercial and public payer sources preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of medical records, health insurance, and billing criteria preferred.
- Strong organization, time management, and prioritization skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Computer literacy with Microsoft Office products, spreadsheets, electronic health record systems, and database programs.
The hourly rate for this position is $27.78 per hour.
