Job Description

Employee Benefits Account Manager

Part Time | 20 to 30 Hours Per Week | Sacramento, California | $35 to $42 Per Hour

Build Relationships. Solve Problems. Own the Client Experience.

Exceed Wealth & Retirement Group is looking for an experienced insurance professional to take ownership of the day to day service and account management for our growing employee benefits practice.

This is not an entry level administrative position and it is not a sales position.

It is a professional client service role for someone who enjoys helping people, solving problems, paying attention to details, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks.

You will become the primary service contact for approximately 20 small business clients, ranging from 2 to 50 employees, and will help their business owners, HR contacts, and employees navigate their health and employee benefit plans.

We are especially interested in experienced insurance professionals who want meaningful responsibility and client relationships while maintaining a consistent 20 to 30 hour workweek.

Direct employee benefits experience is strongly preferred, but it is not required. If you have a solid insurance background, an insurance license, exceptional communication skills, strong attention to detail, and a track record of taking care of clients, we are willing to teach the right person the employee benefits side of the business.

What You Will Own

You will be responsible for the ongoing service experience of our employee benefits clients.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Serve as the primary day to day service contact for assigned employer groups.
  • Process employee enrollments, terminations, qualifying life events, eligibility changes, dependent changes, and other coverage updates.
  • Answer questions from business owners, HR contacts, and employees regarding their health and employee benefit plans.
  • Assist employees and employers with claims questions and help coordinate resolution with insurance carriers and other partners.
  • Resolve billing, eligibility, enrollment, coverage, and carrier service issues.
  • Take ownership of client issues from the initial request through final resolution.
  • Provide proactive status updates so clients do not have to follow up repeatedly or wonder where an issue stands.
  • Communicate professionally with business owners, employees, insurance carriers, general agencies, benefit administrators, and vendors.
  • Assist with annual renewals, open enrollment, employee communications, forms, waivers, submissions, and follow up.
  • Maintain accurate client records, notes, documentation, deadlines, and outstanding service items.
  • Identify potential coverage needs, service opportunities, or issues that should be brought to the attention of the benefits advisor.
  • Help improve service procedures, workflows, checklists, and documentation as you become familiar with our clients and processes.

What White Glove Service Means at EWRG

Our clients expect more than someone who simply processes a request.

We want them to know that someone is paying attention and taking responsibility.

For us, exceptional service means:

  • Responding to client requests the same business day whenever reasonably possible.
  • Taking ownership of an issue until it is resolved.
  • Following up proactively instead of waiting for the client to ask for an update.
  • Communicating clearly, professionally, and confidently.
  • Treating business owners and employees with patience and respect, especially when they are dealing with a frustrating coverage or claims issue.
  • Paying extremely close attention to details that can affect someone’s insurance coverage.
  • Recognizing potential problems before they become larger problems.
  • Doing what you say you will do.

The right person will take pride in becoming the person our clients and our team know they can rely on.

Who We Are Looking For

We care more about finding an exceptional insurance professional with the right service mentality than finding someone whose resume matches every employee benefits requirement.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional experience in the insurance industry in an account management, client service, customer service, agency service, or similar role.
  • Current California insurance licensing or the ability to obtain the appropriate California Life and Health license promptly. A current California Life and Health license is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to manage multiple client requests and deadlines without losing track of details.
  • The ability to communicate comfortably and professionally with business owners, employees, insurance professionals, and carrier representatives.
  • Strong personal responsibility and follow through.
  • The ability to investigate routine problems independently while recognizing when an issue should be escalated.
  • Comfort learning new software, insurance carrier systems, CRM systems, workflow tools, and document platforms.
  • Ability to work consistently during normal weekday business hours.
  • Ability to work from our Sacramento area office as required, particularly during training and onboarding.

Preferred Experience

Experience in any of the following areas is particularly valuable:

  • Employee benefits or group health insurance.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, disability, or ancillary benefits.
  • Insurance agency or brokerage account management.
  • Commercial lines or personal lines account management.
  • Insurance carrier customer or broker service.
  • Small business insurance clients.
  • Claims advocacy or claims related client service.
  • Insurance carrier and broker portals.
  • General agencies.
  • Benefits administration or enrollment systems.
  • Open enrollment and employee eligibility administration.

Direct employee benefits experience may qualify a candidate for compensation toward the upper end of the range.

You May Be a Great Fit If

You are the type of person who sees an unresolved client issue and wants to get it fixed.

You enjoy being responsible for your own book of clients.

You communicate before people have to ask.

You notice when something does not look right.

You keep good notes and remember important details.

You are comfortable speaking with a business owner one moment and helping an employee understand a difficult insurance issue the next.

You remain professional and patient when an insurance carrier or claims issue becomes frustrating.

You like having independence, but you also know when to ask for help.

You enjoy building long term relationships with clients rather than simply completing transactions.

Most importantly, you take personal pride in providing excellent service.

What This Position Is Not

This is not a commission based producer position.

There is no requirement to build a book of business or generate new clients.

This is not an entry level administrative position.

This is not a call center position.

This is not simply a data entry or enrollment processing role.

You will have real responsibility for client relationships, service quality, problem resolution, and the overall experience of our employee benefits clients.

Schedule

This is a part time W2 position working approximately 20 to 30 hours per week.

We anticipate approximately 4 to 6 hours per day, Monday through Friday, with consistent availability during normal business hours.

Because our clients contact us during the business day, reliable weekday availability is important.

We believe this schedule can be particularly attractive to an experienced insurance professional who wants meaningful professional responsibility without a traditional 40 hour workweek.

Location

This position is based in the Sacramento, California area.

Regular in office availability will be required during training and onboarding so that you can learn our clients, systems, carriers, and service standards.

Some work from home flexibility may be available after training based on experience, performance, client needs, and the responsibilities of the position.

Compensation

$35 to $42 per hour, depending on insurance experience, licensing, employee benefits knowledge, communication ability, and the candidate’s ability to independently manage client relationships and service responsibilities.

Candidates with significant employee benefits account management experience may be considered toward the upper end of the compensation range.

Growth Opportunity

We are growing our employee benefits business, and we want this person to grow with us.

The position is expected to begin at approximately 20 to 30 hours per week and could develop into a full time position over the next 1 to 2 years as our client base and service needs expand.

Becoming full time is a potential opportunity rather than a requirement. We are also interested in someone who may prefer to remain in a reduced hour professional role and becomes an outstanding long term member of our team.

As the relationship develops, we expect the successful employee to become increasingly familiar with our clients and take meaningful ownership of the employee benefits service function.
