Job Description
We are seeking a dependable and safety-focused Forklift Operator to support daily operations in a busy lumber yard. This position is responsible for safely operating forklifts and other material-handling equipment to load, unload, move, stack, and organize lumber and building materials.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, has experience handling large or long loads, and understands the importance of maintaining a safe and organized yard.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Safely operate forklifts to move lumber, plywood, building materials, and other products throughout the yard.
- Load and unload delivery trucks, customer vehicles, and trailers.
- Properly stack, organize, and store lumber and materials in designated locations.
- Pull and stage customer orders accurately and efficiently.
- Verify materials and quantities against work orders, tickets, or shipping documents.
- Inspect loads to ensure materials are properly balanced and secure before transport.
- Perform daily pre-shift forklift inspections and report equipment damage or safety concerns immediately.
- Assist customers and drivers with loading materials when required.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, including aisles and loading zones.
- Follow all company safety procedures and OSHA requirements.
- Assist with inventory counts and material identification as needed.
- Perform general lumber yard duties, including manual material handling, cleanup, and other assigned tasks.
Qualifications
- Previous forklift experience required; lumber yard, building materials, warehouse, or industrial experience preferred.
- Ability to safely maneuver long, heavy, or oversized loads.
- Forklift certification preferred; ability to complete employer-required forklift training/certification required.
- Ability to read work orders, product labels, measurements, and basic shipping documentation.
- Strong attention to safety and surroundings.
- Dependable attendance and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Must be willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds and assist with heavier materials as necessary.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, climb, push, and pull throughout the workday.
- Ability to repeatedly enter and exit forklift equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, dust, and other typical lumber yard conditions.
- Must be able to safely work around moving equipment, trucks, lumber stacks, and other yard hazards.
