The SPT I provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department, with a strong focus on specimen accessioning and data entry. This is a fast-paced, production-based laboratory environment where accuracy, productivity, and attention to detail are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform specimen accessioning and data entry accurately and efficiently.
  • Enter approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Process and organize laboratory specimens according to established procedures.
  • Perform functions such as A-station, presort, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging/microfilming, and specimen pickup/delivery as needed.
  • Verify patient and specimen information and ensure proper test ordering requirements are followed.
  • Understand different specimen types and their associated laboratory tests.
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards while meeting departmental completion times.
  • Work with computer systems and laboratory information systems for specimen processing.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation.
  • Follow all biohazard, safety, compliance, and laboratory procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and other levels of staff.
  • Adapt to changing procedures, priorities, and customer requirements.
Schedule & Work Environment:
  • Primarily night shift, based on staffing needs.
  • Weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call availability may be required.
  • Production environment with strict productivity and quality expectations.
  • Position requires approximately 8 hours of sitting/desk-based data entry.
  • Must be comfortable working in a biohazard laboratory environment.
  • Requires the ability to remain focused and accurate while performing repetitive tasks.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Strong data-entry skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet high-volume productivity standards.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to learn laboratory specimen types and testing requirements.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to daily changes.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience.
  • Medical terminology knowledge.
  • Clinical laboratory or hospital laboratory experience.
  • Previous production environment experience.
  • Experience with laboratory information systems or data entry.
