Job Description
Make a meaningful impact in the educational journey of a high school student as an American Sign Language Interpreter. In this contract position, you’ll collaborate closely with dedicated school professionals, facilitating communication and ensuring access to instruction and activities for a student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Your fluency and expertise will help create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Key qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Current EIPA score of 4.0 or higher required in Minnesota (candidates with a lower score and substantial experience may be considered)
- Experience interpreting in educational settings, ideally with high school students
- Knowledge of educational terminology and classroom practices
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and display professionalism
- Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and reliability
Primary responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, school events, and extracurricular activities using ASL
- Collaborate with general and special education staff to support student IEP goals
- Adjust interpreting techniques and language to fit various subjects and classroom dynamics
- Foster student independence, engagement, and participation
- Provide feedback to staff regarding communication needs and strategies
- Adhere to ethical standards as outlined by interpreting professional organizations
