South Texas Veterans Health Care System — San Antonio, TX

Location Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center, 7400 Merton Minter Blvd, San Antonio, TX 78229 (on-site)

Schedule Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM CT, plus on-call and call-back rotation for evenings, weekends, and holidays Reports To VA Chief of Staff / Chief of Radiology Service (or designee), via assigned Contracting Officer's Representative (COR)

 

About the Role

 

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is seeking Board Certified Interventional Radiologists to provide on-site physician services to Veteran patients at the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center. Two physicians must be on site concurrently during normal clinic hours. Services must meet or exceed American College of Radiology (ACR) practice parameters and technical standards, and approximately 90% of time is spent in direct patient care, including on-call duties, required follow-up, and mandatory training.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Clinical Procedures

Perform the full range of image-guided interventional radiology procedures, including but not limited to:

  • Image-guided biopsies (liver, kidney, lung, bone, soft tissue, lymph node, thyroid, and bone marrow)
  • Percutaneous abscess and fluid collection drainage, thoracentesis, and paracentesis
  • Vascular access: tunneled and non-tunneled central venous catheters, dialysis catheters, and port placement/removal
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic angiography, angioplasty, and stent placement (arterial and venous)
  • Embolization procedures, including uterine fibroid embolization and hemorrhage control
  • Mechanical and catheter-directed thrombectomy/thrombolysis
  • IVC filter placement and retrieval
  • Biliary interventions: cholecystostomy, biliary drain placement/exchange, cholangiography
  • Nephrostomy tube placement and exchange, renal tumor ablation
  • Percutaneous gastrostomy/gastrojejunostomy tube placement and exchange
  • Spinal punctures and myelography
  • Ultrasound- and CT-guided needle placement, biopsy, and ablation monitoring
  • Conscious sedation for applicable procedures

    Consultation & Coordination

  • Advise referring physicians on appropriate indications for interventional radiologic procedures
  • Determine appropriate course of treatment and communicate findings in person or by phone
  • Review consults, orders, and next-day patient cases for a minimum of two hours daily
  • Provide post-procedure evaluation, follow-up, and consultation on complications
  • Provide discharge education and follow-up instructions coordinated with the next care setting

    Coverage & Availability

  • Be present on-site during scheduled clinic hours (Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM CT)
  • Participate in on-call rotation; respond to phone consultation requests within 15 minutes
  • Participate in call-back coverage; acknowledge requests within 15 minutes and be on-site within 60 minutes
  • Cover weekend call (Friday 4:00 PM to Monday 7:00 AM)
  • Provide a written contingency/back-up plan when on-call for the VA while also on-call elsewhere

    Administrative & Quality Duties (~10% of time)

  • Attend monthly PI/QA meetings (approx. 12 hours/year)
  • Attend monthly Tumor Board (approx. 12 hours/year)
  • Attend monthly IR Lecture Series (approx. 12 hours/year)
  • Perform ongoing peer reviews (approx. 2 hours/month)
  • Complete QA/QI documentation for procedures, complications, and outcomes
  • Report patient safety incidents via the VA Patient Safety Reporting System within 24 hours

    Documentation & Compliance

  • Document care in the VA electronic health record system per VHA documentation standards
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, the Privacy Act, and VA confidentiality regulations
  • Complete all required annual training (e.g., disruptive behavior prevention, information security awareness, privacy/HIPAA rules of behavior)
  • Sign in/out for all shifts to support accurate time and invoice reconciliation

    Qualifications

    Required

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia
  • Board Certification in Radiology through the American Board of Radiology, with interventional radiology practice aligned to ACR guidelines
  • Successful completion of VA credentialing and privileging (VHA Directive 1100.20 / 1100.21) prior to providing care
  • Current DEA registration and National Provider Identifier (NPI)
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • Up-to-date immunizations and infection-control clearances (TB testing, MMR, varicella, Tdap, influenza, per CDC/VA guidance)
  • No history of license restriction, suspension, revocation, or voluntary surrender pending action

    Preferred

  • Prior experience in a VA, military, or other large hospital-system interventional radiology practice
  • Experience participating in tumor boards and academic/teaching conferences

    Additional Requirements

  • Must not have been excluded from federal healthcare programs per the HHS OIG exclusion list
  • Must carry professional liability (malpractice) insurance; the Federal Tort Claims Act does not cover contracted physicians
  • Must comply with E-Verify and all applicable immigration/employment-eligibility requirements
  • Prohibited from self-referral of VA patients to contractor's own or affiliated practice
