Sterile Processing Technician

Location: Ganado, AZ
Shift: Day Shift
Hours: 8 hours per day

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Sterile Processing Technician responsible for the safe and effective decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment.

The technician will play a critical role in supporting patient safety and infection prevention by ensuring instruments and equipment are properly processed and available for clinical use.

Key Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate and clean surgical instruments and medical equipment using appropriate PPE and infection-control procedures.
  • Disassemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble complex surgical instruments according to manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs) and established procedures.
  • Assemble and package surgical instrument trays and sets accurately.
  • Operate sterilizers, washer-disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, and other sterile processing equipment safely and effectively.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, damage, and completeness before sterilization.
  • Identify and document missing, damaged, or malfunctioning instruments according to established procedures.
  • Operate and monitor sterilization cycles and maintain accurate sterilization and instrument-tracking records.
  • Handle surgical instruments and equipment carefully to prevent damage or loss.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of instruments, supplies, and sterile processing materials.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of sterile processing equipment and work areas.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe decontamination, assembly, and sterilization areas.
  • Follow infection-control, quality-assurance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Complete required computer documentation, tracking activities, and processing records accurately.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing staff, surgical personnel, physicians, supervisors, and other healthcare team members.
  • Report equipment problems, instrument damage, processing concerns, and supply shortages to appropriate personnel.
  • Participate in required training and competency assessments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous sterile processing or related healthcare experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments, decontamination procedures, instrument assembly, packaging, and sterilization practices.
  • Understanding of infection-control principles and safe handling of contaminated instruments.
  • Ability to follow detailed SOPs, manufacturer IFUs, and established processing guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and patient safety.
  • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to complete electronic documentation.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and safely handle sterile processing equipment and instrument trays.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician, such as CRCST, CSPDT, or CIS.
  • Previous experience in a hospital, ambulatory surgery center, or central sterile/sterile processing department.
  • Familiarity with ANSI/AAMI standards and manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs).
