Patient Care Coordinator
Client: UnitedHealth Group / Optum Care Delivery
Position Type: Non-IT Contractor
Location: New York, NY / Sunnyside, NY
Pay: $20.00 per hour
Schedule: Rotating shifts
Dress Code: Business Casual
Work Locations
The Patient Care Coordinator may be scheduled to work at any of the following Optum clinic locations:
- Union Square: 116 East 16th St., 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10003
- Chelsea: 120 West 23rd St., New York, NY 10011
- West 57th: 200 West 57th St., Suite 702, New York, NY 10019
- Sunnyside: 47-01 Queens Blvd., Suite B, Sunnyside, NY 11104
Schedule
Candidates must be flexible to work rotating shifts, including:
- 6:45 AM – 3:15 PM
- 7:45 AM – 5:00 PM
- 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM
Position Overview
The Patient Care Coordinator supports the daily operations of a busy Optum healthcare environment by providing administrative, scheduling, and patient-facing support. This position works closely with a diverse team of approximately 60 professionals, including therapists, aides, authorization representatives, billers, and administrative staff.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, professional, patient-focused, and comfortable working in a fast-paced medical office environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedule, coordinate, and manage patient appointments
- Optimize provider and clinic schedules
- Check patients in and out of the clinic
- Collect and verify patient demographic information
- Accurately enter and maintain information within the electronic medical record
- Manage referrals and Plans of Care (POCs)
- Communicate with patients regarding insurance coverage
- Collect copays and outstanding patient balances
- Answer incoming telephone calls and make outgoing patient calls
- Address patient questions, concerns, and scheduling needs
- Maintain accurate and complete patient records
- Coordinate with clinical and administrative team members to support efficient patient care
- Provide professional, empathetic, and patient-centered customer service
- Complete additional assignments and projects as needed
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
- 1–3+ years of healthcare, medical office, or related administrative experience
- Strong patient-facing and customer service experience
- Knowledge of healthcare administrative processes
- Strong scheduling and coordination skills
- Experience working with electronic medical records; Epic experience is highly preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Flexible and adaptable to changing clinic needs

Preferred Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have previous experience in a healthcare or medical office environment and be comfortable interacting directly with patients throughout the day. Candidates should have a strong understanding of appointment scheduling, insurance-related patient communication, EMR documentation, and general front-office healthcare operations.
