Day in the life

Step onto the shop floor and join a team focused on keeping freight rolling. Your day blends hands-on railcar repair with foundational welding practice. You’ll handle materials, operate shop gear and hand tools, and complete supervised welding as you build toward certification in railcar positions (1G flat and 2G horizontal).

What you’ll tackle
  • Assist with general railcar repair operations and shop maintenance
  • Support material handling during repair work
  • Operate select shop equipment and mechanical hand tools
  • Perform basic cutting and welding; execute limited welding under close supervision
  • Learn and apply basic stick welding knowledge
  • Carry out routine maintenance tasks and develop core car-repair skills through on‑the‑job training
  • Remove/replace uncoupling levers
  • Remove/dismantle couplers
  • Remove/replace brake levers
  • Safely jack railcars for repair access
  • Perform supervised repair on railcar truck assemblies
  • Remove and update AEI (Automatic Equipment Identification) tags
  • Work toward certifying railcar welding positions (1G flat and 2G horizontal)

  • Experience level: 3 years
  • Preferred: 1+ year in each — Mechanic experience, Hand tools, MIG welding, Brake repair
