PetNurse Position Overview
We are seeking experienced, compassionate PetNurses to join our veterinary team. PetNurses work closely with veterinarians and other medical team members to provide safe, efficient, and attentive care to hospitalized, general-practice, and urgent-care Pets.
The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, comfortable in a fast-paced hospital environment, and committed to delivering an exceptional level of patient care.
Veterinary Student Externships
We also offer externship opportunities for students currently enrolled in:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programs
- Veterinary technology programs
- Veterinary technician programs
Externs gain supervised, hands-on experience in a busy veterinary hospital while working alongside veterinarians, PetNurses, and other members of our medical team. Responsibilities and learning opportunities are tailored to each student’s education, experience, demonstrated competencies, and permitted scope of practice.
Externship schedules and learning objectives may be coordinated with the student and their educational program.
Key Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities
Responsibilities will vary based on experience, demonstrated competency, and level of supervision, but may include:
- Monitor Pets and accurately record vital signs, behavior, and changes in condition
- Promptly communicate medical concerns to the veterinarian or appropriate medical team member
- Assist with examinations, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and urgent-care needs
- Administer medications and treatments as directed and legally permitted
- Safely prepare, handle, and restrain Pets for examinations and procedures
- Provide routine patient care, including feeding, walking, bathing, and maintaining patient comfort
- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical records
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with Pet Parents regarding care and treatment instructions, as appropriate
- Maintain a clean, organized, and properly sanitized hospital environment
- Restock treatment areas and assist with inventory management
- Provide clear and complete patient updates during shift changes
- Collaborate with the veterinary team to ensure compassionate and efficient patient care
PetNurse Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a veterinary hospital or clinical setting is required
- At least one year of veterinary experience is preferred
- Certified Veterinary Technician credentials are preferred but not required
- Strong patient-monitoring and animal-handling skills
- Compassion for Pets and a commitment to their health and welfare
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to learn, receive feedback, and follow veterinary direction
- Ability to relocate to Portland, Oregon, before beginning employment, if applicable
Externship Qualifications
- Current enrollment in a DVM, veterinary technology, or veterinary technician program
- Good academic standing
- Interest in gaining hands-on experience in a veterinary hospital
- Willingness to learn and work under the supervision of experienced medical professionals
- Professional, dependable, and compassionate approach to patient care
- Ability to meet any school-specific externship requirements
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move Pets weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and perform other physical tasks associated with patient care
- Comfort working around biological hazards, medications, anesthesia, and medical equipment
