Our client is looking for a skilled Controller to oversee the financial operations of a municipal electric department in Morrisville, Vermont. This role will guide accounting, reporting, budgeting, and compliance activities while providing leadership on financial planning and operational decision-making. The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to support a public-sector utility environment with accuracy and integrity.


Responsibilities:

• Direct day-to-day accounting activities, including oversight of the general ledger, account structure, and timely completion of month-end close procedures.

• Produce monthly financial reports and present clear, accurate information to leadership to support planning and oversight.

• Monitor liquidity, complete bank reconciliations, track investments, and strengthen internal control practices across financial operations.

• Prepare and file required state and federal financial and regulatory reports while ensuring adherence to applicable public-sector policies and documentation standards.

• Lead the annual operating and capital budget process, evaluate results against plan, and deliver regular variance reporting and financial forecasts.

• Develop long-range financial models, including capital planning and rate impact analysis, to support strategic utility decisions.

• Oversee billing, revenue recording, collections, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll coordination in partnership with internal stakeholders.

• Provide financial insight for infrastructure projects, power supply matters, rate-related analysis, grant reporting, insurance documentation, and asset management activities.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
• At least 5 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a municipal, utility, or other regulated environment.
• Demonstrated expertise in month-end close, financial reporting, general ledger management, and preparation of financial statements.
• Strong background in cash flow oversight, bank reconciliation, budgeting, and internal controls.
• Experience preparing regulatory or government-related financial filings and working within compliance-driven settings.
• Proficiency with financial systems, billing platforms, and advanced spreadsheet analysis.
• Effective communication, analytical thinking, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a small-team environment.
