Ophthalmic Technician
Location: Brooklyn, NY 11201
Duration: 13 weeks with possibility of extension
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–4:30 PM
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Technician to perform preliminary screening examinations and diagnostic testing for physician review. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of routine ophthalmic procedures, excellent patient-care skills, and experience operating and maintaining ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Perform preliminary ophthalmic screening examinations for physician review, including:
- Central and peripheral visual field testing
- Ocular motility testing
- Color vision testing
- Pharmacological pupil testing
- Tonometry and tonography
- Tensilon tonography
- Pupil testing for size, equality, and reaction prior to dilation
- Direct patient flow for Eye Center physician examinations.
- Obtain and document medical and personal information for patient charts.
- Screen patients for conditions within the scope of the position, excluding physician ocular examinations.
- Arrange laboratory tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies, patient admissions, and surgical procedures as requested by physicians.
- Explain diagnostic procedures and treatment processes to patients and families.
- Calibrate, operate, and maintain ophthalmic equipment, including:
- Biomicroscopes
- Lensometers
- Keratometers
- Tangent screens
- Slit lamps
- Tonometers
- Clean and stock consultation rooms and clinical/laboratory areas with medications and supplies as needed.
- Sterilize and prepare instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures.
- Assist with minor office surgeries, laser treatments, and operating room procedures as required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Minimum 2 years of Ophthalmic Technician experience.
- Excellent patient-service and interpersonal skills.
- Strong knowledge of routine ophthalmic procedures and applications.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established clinical and safety procedures.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Appropriate Ophthalmic Technician or Medical Assistant certificate training required.
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician certification required.
