Maintenance Assistant

Front Porch of Bowdon is a personal care home with about 29 residents. One house, not a campus. The owner is a licensed nurse and is here.

We are hiring a Maintenance Assistant to work alongside our maintenance lead keeping this building running.

What this job actually is

A little bit of a lot. Some days it is a running toilet, a door that will not latch, and a light ballast. Some days it is moving a bed, turning a room over for a new resident, or hanging something for activities. Some days it is outside - trash, gutters, the walkways, the grounds. And some of it is genuinely building something: we are converting a wing of this house into a small memory care household where residents cook, garden, and live a life instead of a schedule, and the hands-on work of that conversion is part of this job.

Perfect job for someone who is technically included and like working with your hands, wants to be a part of a team and an organization that cares, and do work that matters.

What you will do

• Work the daily repair list - plumbing, doors and locks, lights and fixtures, drywall and paint, appliances, and general fix-it work in resident rooms and common areas
• Complete preventive maintenance and safety checks on schedule, working the checklist and signing off what you did
• Turn rooms over between residents, move furniture and beds, hang and mount things, and set up for activities and events
• Keep the outside right - grounds, walkways, trash and dumpster area, exterior lighting, gutters
• Take part in improvement projects around the building, including the buildout of our memory care household
• Tell the lead immediately when something is beyond what we do in-house, so a licensed vendor gets called instead of it being improvised
• Be available for occasional on-call weekend issues and respond to building emergencies

What we are looking for

• Handy across a lot of things rather than expert at one. Basic plumbing, basic electrical, basic carpentry, and the judgment to know where your line is.
• Reliable. In a building this size, when you are out, it does not get done.
• Discreet and respectful in an occupied room. You will see and overhear things about people's health and their families. None of it leaves the building.
• Comfortable around older adults, including residents with dementia who may be confused, repetitive, or resistant.
• Physically able to be on your feet all day, climb a ladder, and lift and carry up to about 50 pounds.
• Able to read and follow a written work order and to write down what you actually did.
• Maintenance, construction, or general trades experience preferred. Senior living or healthcare facility experience is a real plus. A valid driver's license is preferred but not required.

Before you start

Starting pay rate is $12/hr, commiserate with experience. Employment is contingent on a satisfactory background check and fingerprinting, a negative TB test, proof of eligibility to work in the United States, and completing our new hire onboarding.
