The Tunnel Maintainer position with the Department of Transportation offers a hands-on role that keeps travelers moving safely. This job lets you take charge of important maintenance activities that support smooth traffic flow. You will help keep tunnel systems clean, functional, and ready for daily use. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports safe tunnel operations by performing maintenance, monitoring conditions, and responding to incidents that affect traffic. As a Tunnel Maintainer, you will perform the following duties:

• Tunnel Maintenance: Clean drainage systems, mow grounds, remove debris, and maintain tunnel structures and facilities
• Incident Response: Assist motorists, remove hazards, tow vehicles, and restore normal traffic flow during emergencies
• Condition Monitoring: Observe tunnels for traffic issues, CO levels, fires, and over height vehicles
• Equipment Operation: Use towing devices, wash trucks, pressure washers, and other tools needed for tunnel upkeep
• Work Zone Setup: Deploy cones, signs, and crash trucks to safely close lanes during maintenance activities
• Safety Compliance: Follow safety procedures, complete inspections, and report unsafe conditions to supervisors

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time position within a rotating 24/7 operational environment.
• Work hours vary based on operational needs. Shifts can range from the following and will include a 30-minute lunch:
  • 9:30 PM-5:30 AM
  • 5:30 AM-1:30 PM
  • 1:30 PM-9:30 PM
• Travel and overtime are required.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
• Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,141 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

• All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• All employees must demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
• All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
• All employees must obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
• All positions in this job require additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
