RN – Labor & Delivery (L&D)

Location: Winfield, KS
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: 12-Hour Nights, 3 Shifts/Week
Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery RN for a 13-week contract assignment at a small Critical Access Hospital.

The ideal candidate must be comfortable working independently and providing comprehensive maternal and newborn care in an environment with limited support resources. The L&D RN will be responsible for the full spectrum of OB care, including labor, delivery, newborn care and resuscitation, postpartum care, newborn testing, and clinical documentation.

Unit & Staffing Information
  • Small Critical Access Hospital environment.
  • Approximately 12–25 births per month.
  • Approximately 231 deliveries annually.
  • Typically 2 OB RNs per shift.
  • During low census or when the OB unit is closed, the second RN may be placed on call or may float to another department.
  • On-call assignments may require a 20-minute response time.
  • Candidates must be comfortable working independently and managing a broad range of OB responsibilities.
Responsibilities Labor & Delivery
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care throughout labor and delivery.
  • Monitor maternal and fetal status and respond appropriately to changes.
  • Perform fetal monitoring and interpret fetal heart-rate patterns.
  • Assist with vaginal deliveries and other obstetric procedures.
  • Provide immediate postpartum care to mothers.
  • Recognize and respond to obstetric complications and emergencies within scope of practice.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment for patients and families.
Newborn Care
  • Perform newborn assessments and routine newborn care.
  • Provide neonatal resuscitation as needed.
  • Complete required newborn testing, including 24-hour newborn testing.
  • Monitor newborns and recognize signs requiring additional intervention.
  • Perform newborn screenings and other required assessments.
  • Educate and support parents regarding newborn care.
Postpartum & Documentation
  • Provide comprehensive postpartum care to mothers and newborns.
  • Complete accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Complete required birth certificate documentation.
  • Perform newborn screenings and required testing.
  • Provide patient and family education.
  • Assist with post-delivery care and room cleanup as needed.
Floating Requirements

Floating is required when the L&D/OB unit is closed or patient census is low.

The L&D RN may be asked to float to:

  • Medical-Surgical
  • ICU
  • Emergency Department

When floating, the RN will assist with rounding and/or CNA-related duties but will not be assigned a patient load or primary patient assignment.

Requirements
  • Current, active RN license.
  • Previous Labor & Delivery/OB nursing experience required.
  • Critical Access Hospital or rural hospital experience preferred.
  • Strong experience with labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care.
  • Experience with fetal monitoring and interpretation of fetal heart-rate patterns.
  • Experience with neonatal resuscitation.
  • Ability to work independently in a small hospital environment.
  • Strong clinical judgment and emergency-response skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing census and staffing requirements.
  • Willingness to float when required.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
