RN – Labor & Delivery (L&D)

Location: Charles City, IA
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: 12-Hour Nights, 3 Shifts/Week

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) – Labor & Delivery (L&D) for a 13-week contract assignment.

The ideal candidate will have Critical Access Hospital experience and be comfortable providing comprehensive care across the maternal and newborn continuum, including labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care.

The L&D RN should be adaptable and comfortable working in a rural Critical Access Hospital environment where patient volumes and staffing needs may require support of other departments.

Schedule

• 12-hour night shifts
• 3 shifts per week
• Every other weekend
• Block schedule runs from Wednesday night through Tuesday night
• Followed by 8 days off
• Schedule is based on facility coverage and patient-care needs

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care throughout labor and delivery.
• Monitor maternal and fetal status and recognize changes requiring intervention.
• Assist with vaginal and cesarean deliveries as needed.
• Provide postpartum care to mothers and newborns.
• Perform newborn assessments and provide routine newborn care.
• Support breastfeeding and provide patient and family education.
• Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and facility protocols.
• Monitor patients during labor and respond appropriately to emergencies.
• Collaborate with physicians, midwives, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare professionals.
• Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation.
• Follow infection-control, patient-safety, and Critical Access Hospital standards.
• Provide care across labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn services.
• Float to the Medical-Surgical floor when L&D is closed, based on patient census and facility needs.
• Adapt to changing patient volumes, staffing requirements, and clinical priorities.

Requirements

• Current, active RN license.
• Previous Labor & Delivery experience required.
• Critical Access Hospital experience required.
• Experience caring for patients across:
  • Labor
  • Delivery
  • Postpartum
  • Newborn care
• NRP certification required.
• ACLS certification required.
• BLS certification required.
• Strong clinical assessment and judgment skills.
• Ability to recognize and respond to obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
• Ability to work independently in a rural/Critical Access Hospital environment.
• Willingness and ability to float to Medical-Surgical when L&D is closed.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
