This Instrument Man position requires survey experience. Instrument men will perform the essential support functions and learn new processes while assisting the crew with surveying. Helping in the daily survey routine by assisting in the Boundary Survey, Platting Survey, Topographic Survey, and other surveys as needed. The Instrument Man will perform construction staking, as-built, boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS land title, and lot surveys. Ongoing training and constructive feedback from Project Managers will support the individual’s continued learning and professional growth. As Instrument Man, employees are expected to work safely and manage physical demands while being comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions. This position primarily involves outdoor work, and travel is a regular part of the daily job.

This position will report to the Crew Chief.


ROLES RESPONSIBILITIES

• Accurately runs and adjusts survey instruments, including GPS, robotic total stations, level, and other electronic measuring devices with electronic data collecting capabilities.

• Able to set up equipment, like a traverse control.

• Set up jobs in the data collector.

• Scanning field notes and uploading job, text, and RAW files.

• Ensure to Import/export jobs, text, and RAW files daily.

• Ensures Scans filed notes and uploads jobs text and RAW files daily.

• Utilize software, like Unanet, to track jobs, leave detailed notes of completed work, make accurate time entries, and ensure all instrument and rod men complete their daily tasks.

• Communicates with the crew chief clearly and efficiently on the job site via radio, phone, hand signals, verbal, etc.

• Perform mathematical calculations.

• Reads and understands survey map data and construction plans.

• Taking accurate notes in the field book.

• Can read and understand plats, legal descriptions, aerials, tax maps, CCR, etc.

• Knowledgeable in defining and locating natural and artificial features.

• Properly reading a tape measure and relaying the measurements to the crew chief.

• Being persistent in finding property corners/Control points and properly flagging and labeling them.

• Assisting the crew chief with collecting data and taking measurements.

• Demonstrated ability to identify sources of measurement.

• Properly running the prism, rod, or level rod when necessary.

• Familiarize/maintain truck tools and equipment and ensure the truck is organized and clean.

• Able to identify all material needed for a job (lathe, rebar, hubs, caps, mails, discs, flagging, etc.)

• Help transport/set up equipment and materials on the jobsite.

• Able to identify property corners with guidance.

• Using excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate questions and/or troubleshoot with crew members efficiently.

• Other duties assigned by the Crew Chief.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• High school education requires a college education, including a math, geometry, and trigonometry background.

• CST Certification preferred.

• Minimum two years of experience operating survey instruments, collecting field information, and performing field computation.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

An employee must meet the physical demands described here to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Fieldwork involves working outdoors in all types of weather, walking long distances, and standing for extended periods while measurements are taken. While performing these duties, an employee is frequently required to sit; talk; hear; stand; walk; use hands and fingers to feel, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds.


AVAILABILITY/SCHEDULE

The schedule is from Monday through Friday; the crew's start time is 6:30 AM until the task is completed or a project manager notifies the team of a stopping point for the day. Individual schedules are dependent on the department and client needs. Overtime and weekends as required.


TRAVEL

This position is in an outdoor environment, and traveling is part of the daily job. All employees are expected to be familiar with and adhere to the Company’s Vehicle Safety Policies. Any employee who operates a company vehicle is required to always fully comply with all aspects of this policy.
