Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Biology Academic Lab Technician to assist with the preparation, organization, and maintenance of academic laboratory environments. This position plays a key role in supporting instructional activities by preparing laboratory materials, maintaining equipment, monitoring inventory, and ensuring compliance with established safety procedures. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a hands-on educational setting and can effectively support faculty, students, and laboratory operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare teaching laboratories for instructional use, including setup and breakdown before and after scheduled lab sessions.
  • Prepare microbiological media, mix chemical solutions, maintain bacterial cultures, and assist with the care of live and preserved specimens as required.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality, cleanliness, and safety compliance.
  • Provide guidance to students and faculty regarding laboratory procedures, equipment operation, and safety protocols.
  • Monitor laboratory activities and promote adherence to safety standards and best practices.
  • Manage inventory levels of laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment; assist with purchasing and replenishment as needed.
  • Organize and maintain storage areas, preparation rooms, and laboratory workspaces.
  • Support faculty with laboratory demonstrations, instructional activities, and special projects.
  • Utilize computer software and recordkeeping systems to track inventory, equipment, supply usage, and other laboratory-related documentation.
  • Assist with budget-related tracking for laboratory materials and supply needs.
  • Provide direction or support to student workers when assigned.
  • Complete additional duties that contribute to the efficient operation of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Laboratory Science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a laboratory, scientific, educational, or technical support setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of laboratory support experience.
  • Experience working in an academic, research, or instructional laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with microbiological techniques, laboratory preparation processes, and chemical handling procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of laboratory practices, equipment, and safety standards.
  • Ability to prepare laboratory materials, solutions, cultures, and instructional resources accurately.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and common computer software applications.
  • Strong organizational, inventory management, and recordkeeping skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with faculty, students, staff, and the public.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions while managing multiple priorities.
