Certified Medication Aide (CMA) - Long-Term Care Position SummaryA Certified Medication Aide (CMA) in a long-term care facility is responsible for administering prescribed medications to residents and assisting with daily healthcare needs under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The CMA ensures safe medication practices while supporting resident comfort, dignity, and well-being.Key ResponsibilitiesMedication AdministrationAdminister oral, topical, inhaled, and other approved medications as prescribedFollow the "Five Rights" of medication administration (right patient, medication, dose, time, route)Accurately document medication administration in medical recordsMonitor residents for side effects or adverse reactions and report concerns to nursing staffMeasure and record vital signs as required before or after medication administrationResident Care SupportAssist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toiletingSupport mobility, transfers, and positioning to ensure safety and comfortProvide compassionate, respectful care that maintains resident dignityCommunication & DocumentationMaintain accurate and timely documentation in charts and electronic health recordsReport changes in residents' physical or mental condition to licensed nursesCommunicate effectively with residents, families, and healthcare team membersSafety & ComplianceAdhere to facility policies, state regulations, and infection control standardsEnsure proper storage, handling, and disposal of medicationsParticipate in safety drills and maintain a clean, hazard-free environmentTeam CollaborationWork under the supervision of an RN or LPNCollaborate with nursing staff and other caregivers to deliver coordinated careAttend staff meetings and ongoing training sessionsQualificationsCurrent Certified Medication Aide (CMA) certification (Iowa)Active Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification (required)High school diploma or equivalentCurrent CPR/First Aid certification (preferred or required)Knowledge of basic pharmacology and medication administration proceduresSkills & AbilitiesStrong attention to detail and accuracyAbility to follow instructions and safety protocolsCompassion and patience when working with elderly or disabled residentsGood communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasksWork EnvironmentLong-term care facilities,Requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting residents (with assistance or equipment)May involve exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids
