Staffing Inc. is partnered with a fast-growing Italian furniture manufacturer company in Holland, MI who is actively looking for a qualified Shift Lead individual. The shift leader will be responsible for assisting the Operations Manager coordinate and executing the shift priorities, communicate both production plans and results, and organize the shift for maximum efficiency.

Shift Lead Responsibilities: 

  • Support both the injection molding and assembly operations
  • Scheduling Operators
  • Scheduling/Prioritizing Technical tasks
    • Mold changes
    • Start ups/Shut downs
    • PMs
  • Making production folders, production reporting
  • Monitor/Update the production schedule
  • Monitor and assist with investigation/correction of inventory discrepancies
  • Coordinate efficient breaks
  • Communicate shift results /production tie-in daily
  • Act as an intermediary between office management and staff on shift for plant wide communication
  • Ensure shop standards are maintained i.e. cleanliness, organization etc...
  • Monitor effective labor absorption and personnel performance including shop policies and procedures
  • Coordinate training efforts to keep team well rounded and able to satisfy production requirements
  • Act as a backup, as training allows, to the
    • Process Technician
    • Material Coordinator
    • Operators
    • Shipper
    • Etc...
  • Execute value added tasks as priority/time allows
    • Running machines
    • Executing assembly functions
  • Provide person-specific notification (not discipline) for errors as directed by the operations manager
  • Other tasks as assigned

This job is not considered a supervisory role with direct reports.  Any disciplinary action, reviews, personnel issues etc... are to be coordinated by the Operations Manager, but with data and support from the Shift Leader as required.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent required
  • Some college experience preferred
  • Some administration/supervision experience preferred
  • Collaborative supervision with Operations Manager

Shift Lead Requirements:

  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented
  • Detail-orientated with the ability to multi-task
  • Bilingual - Spanish & English 
  • Good listening skills
  • Able to read and comprehend written and oral instructions
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Standing and Walking:
    • Workers often stand for extended periods, sometimes throughout their entire shift.
    • Walking between different machines or workstations is common.
  • Manual Handling:
    • Lifting, carrying, and moving materials or finished products may be required, often involving repetitive motion.
    • The weight of items can vary, so proper lifting techniques are essential to avoid injury.
  • Operating Machinery:
    • Operators handle and monitor the injection molding machines, which can require precise and repetitive movements.
    • Some tasks might involve using tools or manipulating parts manually, requiring good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
    • Drive a forklift to move loads.
    • Operate an overhead crane to move objects.
  • Bending, Reaching, and Squatting:
    • Workers may need to bend, squat, or reach to access materials, adjust machines, or remove products from molds.
  • Exposure to Heat:
    • The molding process generates significant heat, and workers may be exposed to hot surfaces, especially near the machines.
    • Adequate hydration and protective gear are often necessary to manage heat exposure.
  • Vigilance and Attention to Detail:
    • Constant monitoring of machines and products for quality assurance requires sustained focus.
    • Detecting defects or inconsistencies in products necessitates a keen eye and quick response times.

Work Environment:

  1. Temperature Extremes:
    • The environment in the plant can vary from very warm near the machines to cooler in other areas.
    • Ventilation systems may be in place to manage heat, but the temperature can still be a significant factor.
  2. Noise Levels:
    • Machinery in a plastic injection molding plant can generate moderate noise levels with sounds up to 100 decibels, necessitating the use of hearing protection.
    • Workers must be able to hear and react to alarms, warnings, or other auditory signals over the ambient noise, of distances up to 150 feet.
    • Communication can sometimes be challenging due to the noise.
  3. Safety Hazards:
    • Moving parts, hot materials, and chemicals pose risks. Strict adherence to safety protocols is essential.
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, safety glasses, and protective clothing is required.
  4. Lighting:
    • The plant is usually well-lit to ensure precision and safety, but some areas may have lower lighting, requiring workers to adapt.
  5. Pace of Work:
    • The work can be fast-paced, particularly when meeting production targets.
    • Downtime for machine maintenance or adjustments may affect the workflow, requiring adaptability.
