General Engineer
Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, 2002 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX | Full-Time | 2,080 hrs/year | Standard business-hours shift
Position Overview
We are seeking a General Engineer (PE) to support the Facilities Management Service Line at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, TX. This role provides professional engineering support for planning, scoping, and executing construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects in a critical healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
● Provide professional engineering support for planning, scoping, and executing construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with VA design guides, NFPA 101, NFPA 99, and Joint Commission standards.
● Review design and construction documents from A/E firms and contractors for technical adequacy, code compliance, constructability, and impacts on ongoing healthcare operations; provide written review comments and recommendations.
● Develop and maintain project documentation, including concepts, scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and risk registers in VA systems such as VSSC and SCIP.
● Coordinate with clinical services, Facilities Management, Safety, and Infection Control to sequence work, plan outages, and mitigate risks to patients and staff during construction.
● Provide forensic and root-cause analysis of facility system failures or performance issues and recommend corrective actions or capital improvements.
● Provide project oversight from inception to completion in accordance with VA TIL requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
● Professional Engineer (PE) License required.
● Minimum 5 years of hospital engineering experience.
● Healthcare construction/project management experience.
● Knowledge of NFPA, Joint Commission, and VA design standards.
● Experience with engineering reviews, scopes, estimates, and project oversight.
● English proficiency (read/write/speak); resume demonstrating relevant experience with supporting licenses/certifications.
● Must meet VA training requirements, pass OIG exclusion screening, and meet healthcare facility immunization/infection-control requirements.
Compensation
$80–$91/hour, depending on experience and certifications. Local hourly bill rate — Houston, TX market.
